Fun fact: Abortion is 100% illegal in El Salvador. Not even for the health of the mother or the baby or in the case of rape and incest.

So, great job, country. Don’t get pregnant, but if you do and the child is going to be born with major brain damage, tough fucking luck and if you get an abortion we’re going to prosecute you and throw you in jail.

Ugh. Like either Zika or 100% illegal abortion weren’t awful enough on their own. It turns out they are infinitely worse together.

Is this one of those situations where a woman can just decide not to get pregnant, like she can decide not to get raped?

Well, maybe they’ll at least help women get improved access to birth control?

Jesus, this is really scary. Like Children of Men scary. As someone who wants to have a baby in the next 18 months, I'm so sad for these women.

It's unsettling even from here. I won't be traveling anywhere with mosquitos while pregnant.

Holy crap, it just keeps getting worse. I’m surprised there haven’t been louder discussions about potential effects for the Rio Olympics in less than 7 months...

The sewage tainted swimming pools should kill off any Zika viruses, so they should be fine :-/

My guess is the Brazilian government and Olympic committee is hoping that the problem will miraculously get better and not worse over the summer(yeah right) and they won’t have to officially addres it.

As an aside, as a currently pregnant person, going somewhere as crowded as Rio during the Olympics sounds like the worst thing ever.

Wait, wait, so a country that THROWS WOMEN IN JAIL FOR MISCARRIAGE is now pushing for pregnancy prevention?

Seriously, it makes me sad how true that is. The onus should not be entirely on women to prevent pregnancy. In any case, people need actual contraceptives, none of this rhythm method bullshit, which is obviously unreliable. From what I understand, birth control is very difficult to obtain there, and abortion is flat-out illegal. It’s such a shitty situation for women already, I cannot even imagine the effect this will have.

What I want to know is, what is the government proposing for family planning? Are they going to provide more access to birth control? What’s going to happen to these women? I am so scared for them.

as a pregnant woman this is slightly terrifying.

cases have been documented now in hawaii and florida (all obtained in south america but it spread fairly quickly in those regions..)

If you are in one of the temperate parts of the U.S. or Canada, you should be in a safe part of the year now. You may need to bundle up starting in May for a couple of months, though. If you arena Florida or Juneau, though, maybe staying inside is your best bet.

If the fetus has microcephaly, the woman will go to jail, because obviously she just knew, and wanted it dead.

A good friend of mine is a vet and research scientist, formerly of the CDC and now with Baylor’s tropical disease research department. She’s been to several countries in central and south america to consult with governments on this and she says any kind of vaccine is way off right now - they’re still trying to get to grips with this thing. Mosquito eradication is, as always, a first step, but not nearly enough.

I think they just spray a bunch. That’s what I read they do in other countries that have bad dengue outbreaks— they keep track of the cases and then go out and spray. How you’re ever going to get rid of mosquitos totally is a mystery.
