Let me get this straight. Of all the places you can tour in this magnificent bastard we call earth, North Korea? Am I missing something here?

There are companies like this one mentioned and Koryo that run tours to there. The Brit who runs it has some amazingly tonedeaf things to say in a film available on Netflix called The Propaganda Game, though he will leave you far less slackjawed than a Spaniard who went to North Korea and became a high-ranking official there.

You wouldn't want to increase your proximity to the Glorious Leader Kim Jong Un and absorb his juche however you could? What's wrong with you?

It is never a good idea for the average person to travel to North Korea... for any reason.

Warmbier has been accused of entering North Korea with the intent of “bringing down the foundation of its single-minded unity.”

Kind of terrifying that a government released a statement with this as the official reason for holding another nation’s citizen hostage.

Then again this is Kim Jong-un, so I’m guessing the kid brought in a Maroon 5 album and subsequently was imprisoned forever for fear that citizens would learn that the Supreme Leader isn’t the only recording artist in the world.

He probably challenged one of his tour guides on something or refused to bow at the Kim Il Sung statue (which all visitors need to do). North Korea’s so messed up and paranoid that even if the tour guides give a wrong answer or something that goes against the party line, they and their entire family could be off to a concentration camp.

Or he could have put a newspaper with Kim’s ugly mug facedown on a table, which is also a grave offense.

You’re the only commenter here with any sense. This is mostly like EXACTLY why he was detained. You can’t go to the DPRK and make fun of how sad and backwards it is like you can back in the States. I’m guessing homeboy asked a “bad” question or laughed at something very serious (to the DPRK) — but I also like the not bowing suggestion. Highly likely.

I took a tour to the DMZ when I was in South Korea, and it was a pretty scary ride to the site because we all the a good, stern talking to about how to act and what to expect. We also had to sign a waiver saying it wasn’t their fault if we DIED.

Basically our delightful and hilarious guide told us not to put our hands in our pockets, not to take pictures, not to make eye contact with guards, not to make any quick movements, not to run or yell. Otherwise, he smiled and laughed “you might be shot like a S. Korean tourist was a few years ago!”

Everyone on the bus laughed along with our guide until his face when completely blank and he reiterated “No really, you can be shot if you don’t listen to commands so please just don’t do anything stupid.”

We ended up having to leave the site before our real tour began because there were political meetings and talks happening and apparently the mood was very, VERY tense that day and they didn’t think it was appropriate or safe for tourists to be there.

We did get a little time in the museum, though. Korea’s history is BEYOND interesting, it was well worth the trip even if we didn’t get the whole shebang.

I’ve been to the DMZ (took the happy train there from Seoul, went in to the tunnels, up to the lookout point, and the museum), and i must say it was nothing like you just described. Unless you hit the shit lotto and experienced the worst personalities associated with this tour along the way. The only thing you might have done which I didn’t, is go all the way to that camp area the boarder runs right through. I think there was some option like that which we couldn’t do because of the times. But the “scary” ride there for me was without any exaggeration at all, the most colorful train ride i’ve ever taken. A rainbow colored train, playing jolly children’s music and the train staff literally played games with us all. It was fucking horrifying. Yes there are some basic instructions like don’t do anything overly stupid, but it was very basic in it’s intensity. The actual single word I would use to describe the experience is surreal.

Surreal is right. We took a bus tour and I suppose ‘scary’ isn’t the right word. There was a very serious air to it as we approached, which I feel was appropriate. I guess I had just never been to a place like that before. We didn’t get far, as I said. We were basically stopped at the museum

“according to the Times, Warmbier is a member of the University of Virginia’s class of 2017. His apparent Facebook accountshows that he’s from Cincinnati and a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He’s studying economics, per the Times.”

As someone who’s participated in his fair share of frat wars- I kinda approve of this move by Kimmy. Nothing builds a pledge class together like having to kidnap back your brother from a tyrannical murderer (who prob doesn't even own Sperrys). And the stories!

Yup. It’s pretty simple; if you go to North Korea on some stupid sightseeing trip, you shouldn’t expect the State Dept. to waste their time and money when you get detained/kidnapped/held hostage. Vaya con dios, motherfucker.
