This quiet protest is proof that when it comes down to it people can’t win when they protest. If they quietly stand with a sign in front of a news conference they will be told to be more polite, if they close down intersections or refuse to obey they will be labelled thugs but if they play by the rules set by police and civic leaders they will be criticised as not doing enough.

There really is no winning. But you've got a couple of comments here that show this woman displayed just the right amount of passivity for some white people, so... score?

I do think there are people who can’t contemplate ever feeling strongly enough about anything to protest and others who are just racist and see anything a black person does as rude and not ok.

This is far more effective than blocking a street or a bridge and pissing everyone off. Hopefully we see more of these types of protests.

Fuck anybody who think this was innapropriate! Things got to a point where anything else makes sense, nothing besides disruption of public affairs and shaming people like Rahms in public could have any effect.

This lady has ovaries of steel. She is a badass! I’m proud of her and I pray that I would have 1/2 the courage to do that if I needed to. I wish I could hug her and buy her several drinks.

If only she was white and armed! Then it would have just been considered patriotic, amusing, or slightly annoying.

Protesters always want people to resign, but the people who replace them are never better. Shouldn’t they ask for something more helpful?

Like what? Are you saying we should keep the people in power and effectively tell them “its ok. do what you want youll get to keep your job””?

Not what I’m saying at all, and I see your point. I’m saying I’d want to protest for something more concrete, like for a specific person to replace them. Or for specific legislation.

Good for her! What happened in Chicago is horrible and this woman has got lady balls to do that. I hope that this is what we can say about Rahm’s political career in Chicago soon.

This was very immediate, very personal, very uncomfortable for the people in that room. It was perfect.

How about the woman in the red who was like, “Thank you. You can go now.” I think that’s what she actually said if my lipreading skills are up to par.

The mayors and mayor-adjacent people onstage tugged Goggans’ sleeve, patted her shoulder, and then eventually tried to pretend as though she wasn’t there. Rawlings-Blake eventually continued her speech as though nothing was going on.

“there there, dear. one day things will change. and that one day will be far in the future, when all of us are dead.”

black lives matter 5280 disrupted our mlk day marade in a big way this monday, too. i’m sorry i missed it - that’s a much more effective way to fight white moderates’ co-opting of king’s history and message than facebook memes.
