right? men aren’t the only people that get off on objectification.

ETA in the context of porn. i don't particularly enjoy it, but if i did it wouldn't be an indicator of my larger attitudes about DV and abuse.

You know that outlet theory - the idea that this porn is harmless or even beneficial - is pretty much dead, right, and that the links between porn and real behaviours are really compelling, scientifically speaking? And that objectification in general harms women? Right? You checked that before you decided that this was just people being judgey right?

These are some of the shirt designs. What, in these, gives the anti-violence message?

“Raising awareness” is a dubious goal in general, and I don’t see how these images are supposed to do anything but raise... other things.

Or Pornhub could start by deleting videos that objectify women.

Would that be all pornography (that features women) in your opinion, or just some of it?

Aren't there vast sections of Pornhub that depict violence against women as a "fetish"?

Why do people conflate porn with domestic violence? Yes there is violent and questionable porn but that won’t stop someone like Chris Brown from bashing in Rihanna face or this Mack woman being nearly beaten to death by her loser boyfriend with cauliflower ears.

Objection to porn is a moralistic issue. Objection to violence against women is a human rights issue.

Yes, but porn that depicts violent acts- rape porn, extreme bdsm, etc. have a role to play in the discussion, particularly since this “awareness” campaign is sponsored by a huge purveyor of porn.

The images on the shirts may raise things, but “awareness” isn’t one of them.

Money donated to worthy cause, so (emoji shrug)?

Something about this rubs me the wrong way, so to speak. As someone else pointed out it kind of has that same “save the ta-tas” thing about it - yeah, money is going to a good cause, but I feel like the message may be doing more harm than good?

Just seems sort of dehumanizing/objectifying in that same way - “we have to remind you that women are sex objects to make you care about women’s causes”

I agree with you. This is stupid as fuck. I support Mack but come on let’s do something other than sell t-shirts with your picture on them.

“these unique designs” = pin-up style photos of Mack on otherwise unremarkable tees and tanks.

I really don’t see how these tops will “raise awareness” given that you’d have to know who she is at a glance to make a connection there.

I don’t think it’s really to raise awareness. it’s to get funding dollars from the fappers at pornhub. raising awareness is just another term for securing funds.

But it is what they proclaim to be doing; if you click through one of the women’s tanks the copy ends with “Wear the shirt, raise awareness!” I’d definitely be less disdainful if they just said it’s a fundraising campaign.

Cosmo’s coverage (in the 4th link above) actually calls it a “clothing line for domestic violence survivors, by a domestic violence survivor” which is... interesting.

i’m not clicking that link at work!!! so sight-unseen, i bet the clothes supremely satisfy that awful “male gaze”. like getting fratboys on board with breast cancer research using “save the ta ta” imagery that would be at home in playboy.

This isn’t really an anti-domestic violence line, unless the items they’ve posted aren’t a complete collection. It’s just a bunch of T-shirts with sexy pics of Christy Mack on them. No words. Nothing about domestic violence. They’re more pro-porn than anti-domestic violence. Gorgeous shots, though.

ETA: I totally would have bought one if they skewed more anti-domestic violence, but my current job and lifestyle doesn’t allow me to wear shirts like this or to pay this much for a shirt.

i think that Christy Mack is a damned goddess. her involvement with domestic violence outreach since that asshole nearly killed her has been incredibly inspiring. i have zero snark or wittiness to inject here, she is a fucking hero.

She is brave and I think it’s great that she is outspoken about domestic violence, but these shirts don’t make a lot of sense in that context. I mean, she’s literally the comodity.

Yeah - I’m completely pro Christy Mack and admire her bravery in what was a horrible situation, and have no problem with her profession so long as all performers are treated fairly. But if I saw someone wearing any of those t-shirts I’d be a bit creeped out to be honest. It just says “I like porn” which ok, but you don’t need to advertise it on the bus or at the corner shop. Nothing about them says “against domestic violence”, it’s a sexy woman doing sexy poses. Nothing wrong with that, but if you’re trying to make a statement maybe actually let people know what that statement is.

I’m very sad for what she went through. I can’t even begin to imagine the trauma. However, those shirts and that company (and industry) do not fit well with the cause. At all. It’s great that she plans to donate the proceeds, it really is, but all guys are going to get out of it is
