Jezebel received numerous emails in defense of Dr. Newman after our initial story on the allegations ran last week, many from Newman’s friends and colleagues.

Yeah, and many serial killers’ neighbors and friends said they could never believe so and so could do something like that, “He was such a nice guy!”. Just because somebody is well liked doesn’t mean that they can’t also be a cold blooded psychopath, or a sick and disgusting doctor sexually abusing patients.

The letters shared above don’t speak to the doctor’s character or reputation. They speak to the logistical unlikeliness of the scenario as it was reported, written by people who allegedly would know. There’s a difference.

Did you even read the piece before commenting?

That said, if he is charged I imagine that indicates there is some kind of compelling evidence against him.

“Jezebel received numerous emails in defense of Dr. Newman ... many from Newman’s friends and colleagues”

I didn’t finish reading all of the excerpts before commenting, but the sentence I quoted alone suggests that people were also defending the doctor himself, rather than the hospital’s logistics. Did you even read my comment before commenting?

So if he was charged, does this mean the DNA test has come back positive?

Boy, it didn’t take long for the “she was asking for it” folks to scurry out of the woodwork, huh?

RIGHT?? Why do people immediately go to victim blaming?

I understand not want to believe that someone you know and trusted could do something so horrible, but does the immediate response always have to be “Oh, that bitch is crazy”?

If they were waiting for DNA evidence and took him into custody, is that an indicator that a semen sample came back positive?

These apologists is why victims of abuse don’t come forward. Just because someone has had years of training at a medical school, seminary or law school doesn’t preclude them from being molesters or deviants preying on the vulnerable.

Seriously. Many of them even choose the professions they do to make sure they are in a position of power/beyond reproach. Doctors, police officers, teachers/coaches, etc. There are countless cases of people in those professions who have done horrible things but it didn’t come out until years later. Nobody believed that the super cool doctor was taking personal photos during pap smears, that the nice softball coach was molesting girls he mentored or that Officer Dave was forcing oral sex on women in exchange for them not being arrested either.

Years ago, I read a true crime book about a doctor in a small Western town that was mostly Mormon. The doctor was not. He molested women and girls for years and years, in his office, with their families right out in the waiting room.

Saying that the logistics of the ED make it impossible is ridiculous. Besides, maybe he gets off on the risk. And the assumption that he got the medication from someone in the ED is also just an assumption. Doctors have all kinds of access to meds. He could have brought it from his office. He could have grabbed a bottle when someone’s back was turned. The number of medical professionals who are addicts shows how many people are able to get around safeguards for years.

“It is difficult to keep track of the location of patients, so docs and nurses frequently barge into the wrong room/ curtained off area looking for the wrong person”

Being that it is difficult to keep track of patients locations, isn’t that an exact reason why he could have done this and nobody know about it? Sounds like they have no idea what the fuck is going on on any given day. It is not like every man needs 45 minutes to ejaculate. 60 seconds could be more than enough time for him.

I’m going to guess that the risk of getting caught is pretty high on the list of motivators for behavior like this so saying he’d never do it because he’d know he was likely to get caught doesn’t really hold water.

I am so sick of personality disorders being the be all end all scapegoat. I have BPD, and it seems like one of the last mental illnesses people are totally cool with stigmatizing. Like I understand that people with personality disorders have all these symptoms and whatnot, but you can’t just throw BPD in to justify literally anything negative.

Especially gross to see it tossed in like “well this woman might be lying about her sexual assault. not because I think she’s a bad person or anything, but maybe she’s one of those mentally ill people and is capable of creating a scenario that could ruin someone’s career”. like this isn’t some sort of backwards fucked up victim blaming.

THIS PERSON IS A DOCTOR?? SERIOUSLY? that’s disgusting and they should feel really fucking bad about themselves.

eta: it seems like that email writer may not be a doctor but they should still feel really fucking bad about themselves. and the fact that people are defending him using shit excuses like this only lead me to believe her more.

Same here. I also have BPD and am seriously baffled at the way people view it/me. I think it’s a mixture of ignorance and assholery.

To be fair I do have a lot of issues that do sometimes cause issues for people around me but the kind of shit people either assume about me or not take seriously about me in mind blowing.

I find the “morphine doesn’t do that” bullshit to be the height of willful ignorance on the deniers part. I mean, a quick read of one of the linked articles (I know, it’s the Daily News, but still!) says she was given 2 pain pills and a dose of morphine by the nurse... and then when he comes in, he gives her another injection, but who’s to say she or any of us really know what he had in that syringe? He’s in an ER with much more access than the average joe, and there’s no saying that there wasn’t some lax access controls that allowed him to do it surreptitiously.

      I know.

“She said it was morphine. It couldn’t be morphine, because... Therefore, she’s lying about everything.”

What? She made an assumption about what was in the syringe, and she was mistaken. What does that have to do with anything?

Look, who knows if she is telling the truth. But I am horrified by how hard people are working to call her an unbalanced liar.

There are potential DNA samples being tested, which aren’t going to be easy to explain if they come back positive. Morphine doesn’t magically create DNA.

First off, I will acknowledge that I am horrible. Just so we get that out of the way. Now with that being said, the first thing I thought off when I saw that headline was this scene from an old school anime. I’m sure this guy is just as fucked up as Shinji here.

Funny thing is this isn’t even porn. It’s the second Neon Genesis Evangelion movie. While it isn’t porn it is one of the most messed up things produced by an anime studio. The tv series was weird enough but the movies take it to a whole other level. Here we see our “hero”, Shinji, yanking over the comatose body of his friend who had previously had her mind invaded by an alien creature called an Angel that she and he had to kill to save the world. just...just google it. It’s some messed up shit.

I really don’t know how people think people are coming in and out of ER examining rooms all the time. Every time I’ve had the pleasure, after triage and being put in an examination room, we’ve had to wait...and wait...and wait.

This seems to be a fairly simple case. Was there semen on her face? Y/N. Was it his? Y/N. Was she knocked out while this occurred? Y/N. If not, did she want this to happen? Y/N.

    Three yes’s and he’s guilty.

Yeah, I think blowing your load all over a patient’s face, in a hospital, while they are under your care, is pretty much grounds for being blacklisted from ever being a doctor again in your life. Even if it was consensual.
