While in Seattle the two officers, both members of the Special Victims Division, took the victim on a ten-hour long bar crawl.

Aaaaannnddd, that’s where they lose all credibility, as far as I’m concerned.

My second reaction: Wait, Special Victims is a real thing? But... but...

I know, right? Let’s just for shits and giggles say that he didn’t assault her.

Taking a victim of assault that you are investigating on a ten hour bar crawl (10 hours long?), then taking her back to your hotel room (what, did her apartment suddenly vanish in a puff of smoke?) is a complete “No, you should not be a fucking cop, moment”.

And wouldn’t they watch SVU and see that they’re actually supposed to be the white knights and not make the problem worse?

Sigh. Yet another reason that victims of sexual assaults are loathe to come forward.

My story is NOTHING compared to this, but the one time I had to deal with a cop at my apartment (totally my fault), he kept telling me I was fine not having anyone with me, even though I asked for my neighbor who also happened to be a cop to come downstairs and be there just to be there. He didn’t even want a fellow officer, whose marked car was clearly in the parking lot, so there was evidence that I wasn’t lying that I wanted my cop neighbor to be there for the conversation.

As much as possible I limit my human contact to the people who own the dogs I train. I find it works very well for me.

How what huh he should still be a cop even when he has sex with a rape survivor whose case he is investigating? How the hell does that make sense? How can he not understand that she might not feel fine with saying “no, I won’t go drinking with you, no I won’t fuck you” because she wants the first rapist found? (These are all rhetorical questions...)

Alledged assault notwithstanding, how did they not get fired for ten hours of getting drunk with a victim they were supposedly there to “protect and serve?”

Ya that was just a “slight error in judgement” according to his lawyer.

ETA: that bit from the lawyer is just melting my brain. The statements were “salacious”? Maybe because his behavior was fucking reprehensible???? Fuck these guys, fuck the supervisors who decided not to fire them, fuck their lawyer. FUCK THIS.

Jesus, even if he didn’t believe it was incredibly irresponsible and unethical (which it was) you’d think his lawyer would at least make it seem like he understood the gravity of what he did.

Aw, but I forgot, boys will be boys, right?

“... He made a slight error in judgement” Are you fucking kidding me? You don’t take a rape victim out for a bar crawl when you’re supposed to be investigating her assault. Even without the sexual assault he’s accused of, this man should in no way still be on the force, at least while the investigation is going, and that is damn true for his partner, as well. And the thought of an SVU officer doing this to a victim of sexual assault... It is so disturbing and makes me worry more than a little bit for all the other victims they’ve “helped”. Especially with all the recent sex crimes committed by police officers coming out, the department’s repercussions against these two officers is deplorable. If the people charged to help and protect people from sexual assault are committing assault themselves, then we are in serious trouble. Not to mention, suing this woman for her statements about him after the actions he took? It would be laughable if this whole situation weren’t so fucked up.

And I’m willing to bet that the NYPD specifically TRAINS their police officers who work in the special victims unit on how to behave with victims.

This is an excellent illustration about why that rule is necessary. Because when you’re in an odd situation together and have some attraction or flirtyness going on and then you add in delicious booze and the things that shouldn’t happen seem like no big deal and then the aftermath of that is never good. Having a rule against that recognizes that it’s very human of people to wind up in this situation and that everyone is made aware beforehand of the need to stay clear.

Or they pressured a rape victim into a frat bro stule booze party and then raped her when she wouldn’t put out. Rape isn’t a misunderstanding.

In my experience, people who willfully violate one boundary will tend to violate ALL the boundaries.

“Socializing” with the victim of a sex crime WHICH YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE INVESTIGATING is such an egregious boundary violation that I would suspect that was just the beginning of the story whether she had ever said anything more or not.

This is not a “lapse in judgment” situation. This is not an “oopsie, maybe I shouldn’t have done that.” Drinking for 10 hours with a victim of a crime you are investigating is so completely inappropriate and unprofessional that it’s not even in the realm of possibility that this guy respects other boundaries. Nope. Don’t believe his defense for a second or that he hasn’t victimized many, many other people throughout the years.

Of course they weren’t fired. In order for a cop to be fired he has to strangle a toddler on live television, and even then, it’s not a sure thing, because the toddler might be black and thus the claim that the baby was lunging for his gun.
