When they bite me, the bump turns purple and lasts for months! I still have the outline of a mosquito bite on my leg from August. It's ridic.

Move to LA! It’s magical to live in a land where Mosquitos don’t exist.

Can anyone provide evidence that mosquitos do anything useful other than spread horrible diseases and at the least annoy everyone?

Zika can cause microcephaly, a serious birth defect in which a baby is born with a small head and, often times, brain damage.

    Fuck me, that’s horrible.

There is a vaccine now on trial though. If it goes well, in a couple of months it will be given to all fertile age women here in Brazil.

My son has Microcephaly and all the severe, lifelong disabilities that go with it. His was due to birth hypoxia & it wasn’t anything I did wrong but it doesn’t matter. He’s 8 years old now and there are very few days that go by where I’m not thinking about how I should have known the doctor/hospital were botching his delivery & if I had just spoken up more maybe he would be able to walk and talk and eat and do all the normal things he’ll never be able to do. I hate seeing this in the news because I know it means there will be babies and new parents (entire families) suffering like we have.

We’ve had a lot of success with planting citronella plants around our doors. Lemon Balm is also supposed to work. My dad works outside a lot and keeps those little OFF! clip-ons on him at all times. We live in Louisiana and there is always the threat of West Nile here, so we like to stay vigilant. Also, as I commented in another reply, Purell or GermX, applied to bites, takes the sting and itch right out.

Are citronella plants a hardy plant? Because I have a hard enough time keeping hostas alive.

    “including Puerto Rico”

So the CDC doesn’t understand the Puerto Rico is part of the US?

They do. If you read the CDC’s report, they clearly address Puerto Rico’s potential risks separately from their articles on the Zika virus in Central America, South America and Mexico. The New York Times explicitly refers to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands as US territories in its article. Probably not a good idea to take a line from Jezebel and assume that it’s quoted directly from the source.

This particular epidemic may have started in May, but the Zika virus itself didn’t first appear then; it’s been in Brazil for hundreds of years. It came over with the first slave ships from Africa.

We’ll be seeing more and more epidemics like this as climate change gets worse. In Brazil there have been both huge rains (leading to giant pools of standing water) and droughts (leading people who don’t have reliable access to clean running water to store fresh water in open containers, which is why the police are going door-to-door searching for jars and buckets of standing water). The mosquitoes which carry the virus are thriving now thanks to this.

Damn, cruise lines must be shitting themselves. You can't cruise in the third trimester I believe, but they regularly touch almost all of these places. Why would anyone really want to take the risk?

The Brazilian economy as a whole, really. The Rio Olympics start in 200 days. Obviously the Games themselves are so far down on the list of priorities that they’re almost not worth talking about, but the economic consequences of the disease itself and the travel warning on top of it, coupled with Games. . . what a disaster Brazil.

Well that is pretty awful. Hopefully there’ll be a vaccine soon and hopefully people can keep the mozzies away. In other mozzie news, at least we’ll be getting a Dengue Fever vaccine soon.

Protect yourself against mosquito bites when in dengue-prone areas. Suggestions include:

Avoid outdoor activity, particularly around dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

Wear socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors.

Wear mosquito repellent that contains the active constituents DEET (N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide) or picaridin. Reapply regularly and make sure you follow directions for safe use on the label. Safe during pregnancy.

Apply a product, such as permethrin, to your clothes or bedding.

    Use a bed net.

Stay in air-conditioned accommodation with flyscreens on the windows.

Yup, Latin America and the Caribbean, one big homogeneous country, with no differences or borders or different countries or climates or governments. Or people or cultures or anything for that matter.

The CDC has issued separate (and independently updated) reports on the Zika outbreak in Central America, South America, the Caribbean and the commonwealth of Puerto Rico. They’ve provided specific travel advisories for folks to read depending on where they are (or where they’re headed). This is not being handled monolithically.
