Here is a really really novel Idea: Get on a regular bike and ride. I mea sure you an’t do fancy push up things, but its way more fun, you can ride somewhere to drink beer, or have a picnic, or you know go shopping, pick up your groceries.....bikes were never meant to be indoors and $34 a class is truly criminal. I will take $0 to take you on an awesome 20 mile ride, you wont be tired and you’ll burn so many more calories.

I always laugh when people are, like, shocked when you walk or ride a bike somewhere that is a real destination, but then think it’s totally normal to drive to a gym so that they can ride a bike/go for a run without actually going anywhere.

I think spinning classes are dumb and faddish, but I also wouldn’t ride my bike in the city I live in. It’s taking your life in your hands. Plus, the weather prohibits it for much of the year. It’s easy to tell others to just ride their bikes, but that’s not actually realistic for a lot of people.

$34 for ONE class?!?!?!?! Sweet Baby Jeebus, that’s a lot of money to ride a bike spiritually.

Right!? Crossfit is only $20 per class. (if you pay the full drop in rate)

I won’t even do drop in classes at my favorite yoga studio because they are $15 each! I only go if I buy some kind of pass to lower the cost.

Is this just California that has that law? Because so many of the yoga studios and dance class spots offer class cards, and they all expire in about 9 months to a year (which I thought was a reasonable amount of time to use a 10-pack). Shoot, my 6-class card for LA boxing -purchased on Groupon- expired in just 3 months, and I only used one.

I don’t think it’s fair to blame a studio for you only getting to the gym once in 3 months.

That’s what I was thinking. How does this affect places like dance studios who offer class passes with expiration dates? I feel like this is more akin to buying tickets to a show and not using them, rather than a gift card. You’re buying a specific product (a class), not just giving money to retailer for any sort of object you choose in the future. If you choose not to go, that’s on you.

Looks like it’s a federal law.

I still do not understand what is so special about these spinning classes. What am I missing by just doing the classes at my Y?

It's empty anyways, but that has more to do with the high cost of living in San Diego :P

Do you vomit at your regular spin class? (that would be the main difference for me)

Yeah I mean say what you will about soul cycle but this is bs. They let you know how long before the expiration and 9 months/a year is more than enough to get to those classes.

Expiration dates are bs for these kind of things, but I also agree that if it is pretty explicit when they expire, then it is on the buyer. Although there may be some room for a case if the lack of available of classes affects one’s ability to utilize the pass.

The only justification to this lawsuit that I can make is for the people that were gifted a gift card. If I buy a class pass, I am assuming responsibility that I will go in the timeframe I am given. If I am gifted a giftcard for a class, I may not have the luxury of using it in the timeframe since I wasn’t the one to purchase it.

I’m guessing the shoes clip in to the bike pedals so that people don’t fall off when the bass gets pumping.

People can still fall off if they lose their balance, clips are more for not letting your feet slip from the pedals. I know a lot of cyclists that use them on their bikes.

Wish those expiration date rules were a thing where I live. (Current status: About to lose half of my prepaid yoga package, which apparently expires after 6 months.)

In Canada, they recently barred gift cards from ever expiring. I think a yearly service charge may be applied to cards that remain unused. I used to get so many gift cards that I would fail to use, which in essence meant the retailer got some free money from whomever gifted it to me.

I hope they get these fools (I also hate fitness fads. Crossfit is of the devil).

I thought they had in the US too. I know I used to find gift card syears later and call the number on the back to find it was now empty. But my husband just found a long-lost gift card and we called the number on the back to find it was still worth $25!

Maybe big companies were just guilted/shamed into getting rid of expirations??

Going by the article, I don't think they have to do it legally but PR is very important to large companies (especially places like Target and Wal Mart that sells tons of gift cards).
