begged to use the phone to call the police, and he’d refused: “He was acting like he was drunk.”

Yes, because drunk people never have emergencies, too.

I don’t want to know what makes a 14 year old child want to do this to another human. Christ.

It’s horrifying and heartbreaking all around, even this:

two of the teenagers, aged 14 and 15, were turned in to the police by their parents

I’ve seen people tearing the father to shreds for leaving when commanded (by gun). I know that it’s a tragically difficult scenario to imagine, and people’s instincts are to stay with their children no matter what, but who knows what would’ve happened if he stood his ground? At least this way he was able to leave and (finally) get help. If he’d stayed, he may be dead and she might have been killed, too. I wish people would just shut the hell up about what they would or wouldn’t have done in these situations. It doesn’t ever help. (You hear me, Ben Carson?)

I remember seeing an episode of Adam-12 where Malloy and Reed were giving a community talk to a class of women at a local college. One of their lessons was that victims need to decide ahead of time to fight back or just basically surrender to the situation with the idea that while the crime is occurring you get help as soon as it’s over and you make yourself the best witness you can be. The father in this case made a choice, and give the circumstances, it was a good choice and I’m glad to know that when he withdrew from the situation he didn’t go off and hide or keep running.

NBC also filmed themselves knocking on the door of the young woman’s family apartment

That right there? That’s not an attempt on gathering news, that’s pain tourism.

And such a horrendous violation of her privacy! “Here, let’s show the world where she lives, that seems like something people need to know for safety reasons...”

      Just a continuation of violation...

I am taking a wait and see approach to this case. Before I get dragged to hell here, I am a woman, I have experienced sexual assault, and it is my first instinct to always believe the victim. But there is something about the father’s behavior in this case that just isn’t right. Any locals following this case know what I mean? It was originally reported for more than 24 hours that the victim was with “a friend,” not her father. When the attack allegedly took place, the father — who had no cell phone — ran off to a bodega, where they didn’t let him use the phone because, as they said, he didn’t appear particularly agitated or concerned. Later, when the father was interviewed by NBC-4 NY, he described the attack in a way that only can be described as odd. Why was the NYPD slow to respond? This entire scenario feels hinky to me.

Haven’t watched a minute of that, but I’ve sure as shit seen my share of crimes reported in NYC over the past 40 years — thanks for asking

Quite possibly the only, singular sentence in this entire story that doesn’t make me weep for humanity. If I had a son who brutally raped someone at gun point, you would simply no longer be my son.

I generally don't believe in spanking my kids as punishment but if this was my kid you can bet a million that I would beat his ass bloody. Then I would dump him on the police doorstep and offer no help to him. I swear.

I read the comments on Facebook when this story broke and it was vomit-inducing. People were already saying it was a set up, that the father was in on it, that the girl was lying. What does it take in this world to be believed anymore? My thoughts are with the survivor and her family.

You don’t have to go to Facebook for that type of comment. There’s one of those right here in this thread, in the black. You know, ‘cause they’re just asking questions.

The rambling mess of a comment (and the replies from them that follow) rests on the fact that one news organization reported early on that she was walking with a friend instead of her father. Because the media never makes errors in early reporting of stories.

So, ergo, the girl is lying and the father is lying. Why? Who the fuck knows? I guess it could be that sweet, sweet pile of loot that all rape victims apparently get. Or, so all of the Cosby supporters on Twitter and Facebook tell me.

Of course it took the NYPD 2 days to issue any sort of community warning. Here we have the double whammy of 1) rape and 2) a low-income and mostly black neighborhood. Those aren’t things that the NYPD is trained to care about - let’s just let them get back to ticketing cyclists who roll through stop signs in Brooklyn Heights.

So what if the guy was drunk. You have nothing to lose by calling the cops. Don't want to let him hold the phone? Fine, just call the cops yourself.
