I am glad you guys posted something, the mainstream media’s insistence on burying this story because they are afraid it may cause people to be racist/biased/whatever is abhorrent. Hundreds of women were sexually assaulted in a coordinated attack, this should be the number one story. It isn’t even on CNN’s front page, and it barely was the day after it happened. I would hope that the liberal media could be confident enough in its viewers/supporters intelligence to understand that not all Muslims are going to do this and report on this in the manner they would if it was a group of white men who did it.

Found this article interesting; apparently Stockholm had some similar attacks last summer and the press stayed quiet about them too.

      http://nyheteridag.se/exposing-major...

Amazing how Jackie & the Rolling Stone article are still a news story over a year later, but an actual, horrific attack by an incredible number of men hurting an incredible number of women is just kind of ignored.

I am so so frustrated, I could cry. I did see the article you reference too. Surely we can talk about this intelligently without once again silencing women. I mean, plenty of white men rape, plenty of men from all races rape, we need to talk about it.

I’ve noticing recently how certain groups of people who never care about rape and sexual assault suddenly have no problem standing up for women when these crimes are done by brown-skinned men.

Personally, I don’t care what nation they’re from, nor do I blame their religion. You could remove religion from the planet and this type of tragedy would still occur. Forget race or religion. They are men first.

Religious and cultural background absolutelty matter because they are explantory factors for behavior. Period. You can isolate these things as causal factors without being a racist, Islamophobic asshole, but ignoring the fact that numerous women were sexually assaulted by a specific group of men because that fact makes you uncomfortable is pathetic.

I actually have seen more comments like yours, then I’ve seen of people actually caring about women/condemning brown people. Everyone is chomping at the bit to say that we care more about this because “brown” people did it, when the reality is, no one cares about this! This has barely even been a news story. Yes, the typical conservative slanted sites will look for any opportunity to be racist, but if you look at what is actually happening with this story, it is barely being covered and the discussion has overwhelmingly been about how people hope no one is racist (racist is the wrong word here but its what people seem to be using) towards Muslims because of it. No one seems to care about the women. And, I mean, I totally get it, I am a brown person I sure as hell hope this country doesnt get worse than it is, but damn I am also a woman.

Germany has taken in 1.1 million people in less than a year. Not selected from camps and checked - jut opening border and welcome. About 70 to 80% of them are fit young men. They come from cultures where you can “ slut shame “ a woman for showing any part of her body. You can have thick stockings, full baggy covering including gloves and face and still get criticised for showing your eyes. If everyone and everything you know supports that view - how slutty are Western women going to look to you?

The old “ she was wearing a short skirt so she wanted it” ( it being raped) has been hard enough to beat out of our culture to the extent it has. There is a heck lot of work to do to get the men from these cultures to repect women’s rights. I don’t want to be treated “ like a princess” - ie need a male escort to leave the house, fully covered. Do you ?

Pretty sure that covering everything except the eyes is not a cultural norm in Syria. You are painting with a pretty wide brush there.

the immigrants are not all from Syria— they are from all over the middle east and africa. most of these societies require women to dress modestly, with a few on the more extreme end committing violence against women who are not 100% covered. for the most part, these extreme religious rules are pretty recent, the result of Islamic cultural revolutions in the 70s and 80s. what matters is that most of the men coming to europe now were born and raised in highly patriarchal societies where casual misogyny goes unchecked.

“Allegedly concealing information” - translated , that means that initially, the police reported that the night had passed “peacefully “ & it took 4 to 5 days for the truth to be acknowledged publicly. The mass sexual assults was too widely reported on social media for it to continue to be denied. 100 men were arrested on the night. 35 since. Basically the police were overwhelmed. Men had Arab German translations for “I want to touch your breasts” “I want to fuck you” & “ I want to kill you” on bits of paper in their pockets.

In addition it also happened in several other large German cities, and also in Finland and Sweden. All at the same time.

This is the largest mass assault of women in Europe since the end of WW2. Bless the lady who stood naked afterwards with a sign saying.

“ Even naked, we are not fair game”

I spent 2 years on World Hijab page. The attitude is that a woman should be covered so as not to inflame men. The girls and eomen report being called sluts and prostitutes while they were viciously assaulted. They were there to watch the New Years fireworks.

Heads up women who believe in freedom. Women in Germany were advised by female Mayor to keep strange men at “ arms length”. Unfortunately if 20 or 30 men are pack attacking you , that will not work. Women in groups of ten were attacked. A man had his wife and 15 year old daughter attacked in front of him..

Remember this was totally co- ordinated.

Ps . I am not american and my comment is in no way related to your domestic politics.

Out of curiosity, what was the mass assault of women in Europe during WW2? I’ve mostly only heard of the Japanese atrocities against Chinese and Korean women.

As an American who’s been to Norway many times (and is white), I wonder if I’d have to take the same class if I ever resettle. I wonder if women need to take a similar class as well. Men are the main reason this shit happens, but it’s a social thing. Women do play a functional role sadly.

I don’t know about you but issues of consent and abuse were part of my public high school’s sex-ed course (I’m a woman). They should be a standard part of education and indeed already are in many cases.

As for all immigrants being required to do this, a little refresher never hurt anybody, but for now the program is voluntary.

There was a similar effort in Helsinki, that was stopped early by police intervention. I’m not sure which would be more disturbing - finding out that this was planned across countries, or finding out that it wasn’t (since it means this was more or less independently organized attempts by migrants/refugees to assault women in groups Tahrir-Square style).

At least at the city level, this is definitely starting to seem planned in advance. They even congregated in a massive group beforehand, before splitting up to assault women in smaller groups. And as the article mentions, they tried to force their way into night clubs and the like.

I’ve been steamed about this whole thing when I first started to see the stories emerge online. And the advice to the women...to keep at arms distance, don’t talk to strangers, walk in pairs, etc. What BS. Makes me sick.

I know this is going to sound wrong. But I find it crazy frightening that your country will allow thousands of young single men in from culture(s) that do not treat women well to begin with and then this sort of thing happens and the advice is that it’s something YOU as a woman need to manage not THEM as newly invited citizens. My vibe is for them to get the F out.

This is the first article jezebel has written since the attack, almost a week ago.

I can’t think of a more high visibility victim blaming than the (female) mayor telling women to keep arm’s length away from men.

I get that you don’t want to look racist, but complete silence on such a vast attack is cowardly.

It undermines American feminism and concerns about rape culture on college campuses when you offer literally no coverage for over a week... 9 days later now? Shameful.

To be fair. They did a tiny story with minimal information about 35 asaults at 6 am a few days ago. It was then buried in other stories. People were asking for more and being attacked by others for it. It was very strange.

I know many here will go on on about how it’s the same everywhere and all that, but it simply is not true.

Germany, Denmark or Sweden certainly aren’t perfect when it comes to sexism, misogyny or human rights in general, but they are 100% better than almost anywhere else in the world.

A lot of imigrants to those nations come from cultures where women’s rights are a 100 years behind said countries, cultures where not beating your child is viewed as strange.

I am not saying racist politicians are right, it is not about the skin color of these men, it’s about the cultures that raised these men to do as they please when it comes to women and children. Cultures which are extremely similar to the cultures that existed in Western Europe a 100 years ago.

But just because the racists and xenophobes are wrong about the reason as to why these men behave as they do, you can not ignore just how much worse they are than their counterparts from Germany or the Nordic countries.

For example I a Roma from Latvia, many people from my country now live in Northern Europe, Germany and the UK. You know what is a big issue they have with local authorities? It’s not being allowed to beat their kids, because it’s normal to hit your kid here, but it certainly isn’t allowed there. They even blame the gays for it, because if it’s all about gays wanting their babies for themselves.

Now that is an example of the cultural norms of my country not being compatible with the host nations cultures.

It would be wrong to assume that people from cultures that accept violence against women and rape as a norm, cultures where it’s almost impossible to be a rapist, will suddenly accept western culture and change their ways.

I am not saying close the boarders but the last 20 years of just letting anyone in and not doing anything to reeducate them hoping it will end up fine, certainly hasn’t worked.

There still is time to do something, before the fear and hate make any reasonable solution impossible, and believe me I and my people know what happens when Western Europeans let fear and hate dictate their actions.

There have been some very documentaries from France and the UK about ISIS/Daesh. You probably won’t hear about them in the US because they are very critical about US policy and how it shaped the creation of ISIS and how the superpowers and Arab states have a keen interest in keeping ISIS going. They discuss too many fascinating things to list here, but as you might know, it always comes down to money and there are many in the US and Europe who end up funding ISIS in a round-about way.

I live in Germany and there are serious, serious problems in the refugee enters. They lumped everyone together and in general the Syrians will tend to think that the North Africans are full of **** and the Albanians fight with the Afghanis and so on and so on. Women are getting raped in these centres. Germany has not hired enough security. Of course, when it escalates beyond the refugee centres, then everyone is in an uproar. :-/ There was some insane fight in a centre here in Berlin with maybe 200 or more men and the security guards were massively outnumbered. It exclusively because people from different countries are NOT banding together just because they are Muslim. You gotta admit, the North Africans haven’t seen shit in life compared to Syrians. But North Africans are most often the perpetrators of the events in France. Eh....hard to explain. A history book can explain it much better than me....

I lived a very long time in France and the way that Germany is treating the subject is 180 degrees from how things are handled in France. They have the shame of WW2 on their back and in general things are much calmer than in France. In France, society encourages rebellion, but in Germany, god forbid someone should speak up! Again, look at history.

France has been living with terrorism for quite some time. Germany is quite naive on these subjects. France historically has the best intelligence on the Middle East and Africa and Germany has zilch. Belgium is a freak show, total freak show. I guess you could say the Germans really have their head buried in the sand. That being said, I find Germany is a much better, safer place to live than France right now, but I really like how there are armed security crawling all over Paris. There is freaking no preventative security in Berlin and it is terrifying. It has come out recently that Berlin alone is woefully understaffed in the police and military. Some people from the government have leaked that if what happened in Paris happens in Berlin, no one will be saved. Thank god Munich was informed by France about the NYE terrorist attack!

The ambiance in Germany was really beautiful last year, I have never seen a people open up so warmly to their supposed “enemies” (Muslims). Maybe they were naive, but it was still breathtaking to watch. I guess all good things come to an end?

TLDR: Just as the mentality of a New Yorker is not the same as someone from Florida, ditto for a Japanese and a Cambodian, a Syrian and an Algerian have much less in common than you think. And France is completely different than Germany. In Paris, getting molested by North Africans was so frightfully normal that I am now quite talented in beating men with my handbag. Today in Berlin, I decided to borrow my boss’ Swiss knife and I am not afraid to use it.*

*But there is no way I would buy a gun!

Do you think you could give me the name of some of the documentaries you mentioned? I obviously need to learn more and there’s always so much crap to sift through; it would be good to get some legit recommendations.

Also try Agence France Presse, they will have good info.

I read today in the Bild (not the most reputable newspaper) that 18,4% of sexual attacks in Germany are committed by “non-Germans”. Can’t find it now, though...here is a really cool article on the breakdown of sexual violence by nationality in Austria, lots of numbers. http://diepresse.com/home/panorama/...

Sweden covers up migrant sex assaults: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-eur...
