My own Trump-supporting mother-in-drunk is super proud of herself for never having received any sort of monetary benefits from the government. She fails to realize that she has lived in public housing in NYC for the last 40 years. It’s a high-rise for those in the arts. She has a one bed on the 23rd floor in Hell’s kitchen that would go for $3000 normally. She pays about $400.

1 out of 5 children in the US receive food stamps.

The number of children receiving food stamps remains higher than it was before the start of the Great Recession in 2007, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s annual Families and Living Arrangements table package released today.

The rate of children living with married parents who receive food stamps has doubled since 2007. In 2014, an estimated 16 million children, or about one in five, received food stamp assistance compared with the roughly 9 million children, or one in eight, that received this form of assistance prior to the recession.

You’ve really kind of distilled modern conservative candidate down to their essence. No optimistic, unifying vision of the future of America — nothing particularly hopeful. Just, how -insert conservative candidate’s name here- can screw those less fortunate than them better than the other guy.

And as the nation’s demographics change and the middle class continues to wither on the vine, that message is finding less and less of an audience because far too many American’s are realizing their fortunes are fucked and the people responsible look a lot like Jeb Bush.

“The money would be funneled to grants for states to develop their own welfare programs...”

Oooohhhh - this shit. Don’t even get me started on this shit.

Yes - instead of directly and efficiently deploying benefits to poor people, let’s cancel all the programs, and give all the money to the states. It’s the same amount of money, but we’re saving money for reasons of shut up.

Then any or all of these things can happen:

    • the states can waste money duplicating a distribution system that the feds already had. Multiply this by every state. This is great for handing out jobs to your constituents, by the way. Oh - can poor people relocate from state to state without disappearing into a shrieking, skinless, nightmare of bureaucratic dead ends and red tape? No. They almost certainly cannot. Sucks if there’s no jobs in their state, but, you know...we don’t care.
    • the money disappears into the general fund. Should it? No. But who’s really paying attention? Once they’re getting the money, they can claim that it’s subsidizing existing programs, or use some other accounting malarkey to jazz hands the money into the ether. Is there oversight? On each of the 50 states’ differing methods and programs? Sure there is.
    • the states can implement their own programs with their own standards. Are the benefits too skimpy? Are the standards too strict? Again, who knows? Is anyone paying attention?
    • more should go to the states that have more poor people, but the senate and the house will want to weigh in. Remember how rural police stations got fucking nuclear submarines as part of the “anti-terror” slush fund about 12 years ago? Expect Montana to get the same amount as New York - or more! Again - no-one will be watching.

This is not a stupid idea, in that it’s a perfect way to direct as much money away from the poor as possible while still maintaining the pretense of giving a shit.

We don’t hand out defense money to the states and have them make an army. Why? Because its fucking stupid, its inefficient, and our army would be a disaster. You can be damn sure Bush, Ryan, or any other politician would never send something they gave a shit about to the states. The states are where programs die, and money disappears.

I mean, if a child’s parent isn’t motivated enough to get a job, why should that child have free access to luxury items like food? If they really want food that badly, they can just sell their Dalmatian puppies to me to make beautiful fur coats out of.

‘The money would be funneled to grants for states to develop their own welfare programs’

Which will then be funneled directly into the back pockets of state politicians. Great, that’s what we need. I mean, if kids really wanted to eat then they wouldn’t be born to people who can’t afford to feed them, right? Bootstraps!

Aaah see the genius at work though? That way the national-level pol is just promoting “state’s rights” and “smaller government” and “local solutions” and they can rely on the state legislatures (heavily gerrymandered of course) to enact the harmful policies and take any localized flak (which, by virtue of being local, will be less loud).

So basically, the way to get noticed as a republican, is to be as cruel as possible to the most vulnerable and marginalized in our society. Also complain about political correctness, and then proclaim how awesome you are.

    This is the GOP folks.

Empathy is a surprisingly rare trait, and the GOP is learning that their base is largely made up of people who lack empathy for anyone. For decades they’ve feigned empathy to try to appeal to moderates, but now they’re simply dropping the pretense.

What is it with these people and wanting to dismantle the few precious things that keep us from falling into fucking 3rd world country state.

Like, do these assholes even process the concept that these social programs and subsidies came about due to real fucking fear that the fabric of society was not going to be able to hold up considering the massive shearing forces that tend to come into play with the capitalistic system we’ve adopted.

And on a more spiritual level...why are these fucking clowns so just...mean...to the goddamned poor. They’re poor people. They don’t want to be poor. They’re not reveling in their fucking poverty. Why does that invite shitbags to want to hurt them more?

We’re fucking terrible and we’ve showed the world as much so many times in the last couple decades. We’ve proven to the whole world that there’s fucking zero behind the curtain when it comes to us. Not one guy running a scheme...just nothing...an empty fucking room.

Christ I feel like posting that scene at the end of Episode III with the final pleading monologue between Obi Wan and Anakin. It’s so damn appropriate.

This is why I’m actually kind of grateful for the success of Donald Trump’s candidacy. It’s time we had a Republican candidate that has laid bare the ugly, withered heart of the American right wing and doesn’t even pretend not to be a repugnant asshole. When you see someone who is a Trump supporter, you don’t need to wonder if they’re one of those “compassionate conservatives” who are basically decent people with different political views. Trump is so openly, unapologetically horrible that, if you support him, you can’t claim to be misled by a veneer of decency. You are a straight up asshole. Part of me is burning for a Trump-Sanders presidential race so that America can lay its cards on the table and decide without any self-deception what we want this country to be.
