“I was the first person to think in my head that country people like rap music—or they like the beat—but they just don’t identify with the artist that is singing that song,” he said. “That’s why it never gets past midnight and makes it to the next morning, and they don’t want to enjoy it again. So I decided that I would put a face they could identify with to something that they enjoyed in the late nights.”

Isn’t this pretty much a textbook example of cultural appropriation?

      “Cultural Appropriation”

Oh fuck off with this already

EDIT: Wearing blackface, native american headresses, sikh religious garments on halloween is obviously wrong and nobody should do it but a white guy rapping? Seriously, who gives a fuck.

Country? Rap? King? I’ve never felt so good about being too old to know shit about modern music. Just gonna head over here and listen to some Pearl Jam.

Convincing strangers to buy an album takes the same skill set as selling a dime bag of weed, he jokes,

This is where he lost me. People actually want weed; it’s not like dealers actually go around harassing people in parking lots to buy it.

This has been part of Jay Z’s shtick ever since he moved on from the aloha shirts and cheap chains of his Hawaiian Sophie days and reinvented himself as Ex Kingpin Turned Rapper. I know there were some dudes doing it before he did, but Hova worked this angle for hundreds of millions of dollars and it’s now de rigeur for aspiring rap moguls to emphasize how they’re basically still hustlers with a different product using the same skills in a similar game.

Knight is just going down the checklist of things more interesting and talented people have already said and thought, but he looks very different and talks about dimebags of weed instead of crack.

Gosh, I wonder why they don’t identify with the artist? Is it because they are racist AF.

I made the same mistake, because all his stuff is on Spotify. It’s actually more pandering than the article suggested.

Hmmm—other side here I guess. I found it fascinating reading and thanks for the effort. Coming from Central Valley CAli with tiny towns, LOTSA all kind rap/hiphop from Latino on— not surprised to find hick-hop. The new US seems to be about poor, white, disenfranchised folks who can't believe skin color is simply not enough to let them move on up to where they think they belong. xxoocf
