Olsen's defense attorney will doubtless use Gawker's annual "things found up people's rectums" roundup to show that he was justified in thinking Hill had a weapon.

So Olson should have used Kung Fu on this charging maniac instead, risking him being overpowered and giving this man possession of his gun?

This case will fail, just as the linked did last year

I think the lesson to take from this is we should spend less on mental health support for veterans and more on sending troops to countries loosely associated with terrorists, while using the discarded equipment from recent wars to further militarize our police.

I like it. Are you running for office, by any chance? I’ve got a spare million in the bank making jack shit on interest (thanks Obama) and I need someplace to put it.

Discarded equipment can also be used to give the loosely organized terror groups a better chance!

Is this another one of those Grand Juries along the lines of Tamir Rice, where two cops basically did a drive-by on a 12 year old kid?

      no no.

this trial’s in Georgia, so they’ll likely scream “NOT GUILTY!!!” the second they see the victim was black, burst out laughing and do a conga line out of the courtroom

The difference is that the prosecutor in the Rice case clearly didn’t WANT to indict, but this guy seems to believe it is warrented.

I get bringing murder charges, but why felony murder? Wouldn’t this just be straight up murder, since the officer intended to shoot the guy? In any case, what would be the underlying felony? Assault with a deadly weapon, etc. generally merge into the killing under the merger doctrine of felony murder.

Or is he just contrasting the charge with some sort of “misdemeanor murder,” a crime I have never heard of (not to be confused with misdemeanor manslaughter, a real and insane common law doctrine).

      Wondered that as well.

Possibly the charge is based upon deriliction of duty leading to death. Maybe a Georgia lawyer will happen by and opine.

Looks like the prosecutor is alleging the officer murdered the gentleman while committing aggravated assault. Georgia’s law is written really weirdly, though.

Don’t expect anything to come out of this. According to this article, police shootings hit an all-time high in 2015, and out of the 1200+ people that were shot, police were held accountable exactly 0 times.

Being charged is a pretty good start. That didn’t used to be the case.

Of course, one of the cops that shot Amadou Diallo and was actually charged for it and acquitted just made sergeant in the NYPD, so it’s not all rainbows.

Michael Slager, who murdered Walter Scott, has been charged and indicted and has a trial date set for October. So, I don’t know if I would characterize it as “exactly zero”. (The cops who were charged in Laquan McDonald and Akai Gurley’s shootings committed their crimes in late 2014.)

It is sadly unsurprising that the number of shootings reached an all time high (even as crime reaches all time lows), as departments increasingly teach police to regard everyone as an immediate threat to their life and to be as paranoid as possible.

Georgia prosecutors will seek a felony murder charge...

This the very crucial distinction between this case and the case of Tamir Rice (and John Crawford and Laquan McDonald and...)

In the officer’s defense, nobody wants to fight a guy with his dick out. See Kevin Hart.
