I would love to see one American state go full-on libertarian (as much as they could within a federal framework). I’m intrigued by the libertarian ‘experiment’ overall but wonder if it would all fall apart in a week, month or a year.

I don’t see it working very well, at least not in any state with any sort of population density to speak of.

Not that I have an intention of voting for them, but I’d ideally have liked (and honestly predicted that it would happen) the GOP to transform into a Libertarian party instead of the Racist/Xenophobic/Fascist party. I’d feel safer with the debate being between sanity and people who like chanting “liberty” at problems, rather than between sanity and whatever it is that the current GOP is supposed to represent...

Definitely agreed there. At least that way you’d have a competing ideology. The GOP has none to speak of, but rather a loose jumble of assorted causes (decreasingly) championed by people who’d rather feel than think.

It would be very nice if the GOP could shake free of the evangelicals, but yeah...that’s certainly not happening this election.

Paul isn’t electable, IMO, because Libertarianism works far better as a personal philosophy than a system of government. He can’t run straight Libertarian as there aren’t nearly enough of them, and as such must hope to siphon the populist elements of the GOP to their side.

Like anarchism, it’s basically a critique of statism. It can do a good job of pointing out government problems, but it’s not terribly practical in solving them.

Does anyone honestly remember the last time a 3rd candidate made an impact in the general election? Was it Perot in ‘92? It’d be nice, for a change, to get a 3rd party candidate who could make some waves...

Nader in 2000 swung enough former Democrat voters against Gore, which enabled Bush to take the presidency. (Despite the fact that Gore won the damn election).

As a libertarian, he gets his own clown car, completely separate from the GOP clown car. The libertarian clown car was constructed without the benefit of crash testing in a regulatory vacuum, and will most likely explode its operator upon starting up.

That’s a hot, well thought out take! <puts gun in mouth>

They, obviously, are different types of libertarians. Gary Johnson is the “I want the ability to smoke weed whenever I want without the cops hassling me man” Libertarian.

Rand Paul is the “I don’t want the government up your asshole or mine or listening to this conversation or that and spending billions of dollars on things outside this country that are not our business”. And Rand isn’t running the most successful Presidential campaign, and he’s probably ok with that, but he’s a really great advocate for Libertarians, generally. Probably the best they’ve ever had. And in the long run, that probably matters more, especially if a fake conservative like Trump gets the nomination and allows his love of big government to take over.

Really, just “lol” at this mess. Rand is even less an actual Libertarian than his daddy, and I’d wish people would stop pretending this man who wants a government so small it can fit inside a vagina is “libertarian.”

Saying “he didn’t do so well back then” is completely inaccurate, Andy Cush.

The Johnson/Gray ticket received 0.99% of the popular vote, amounting to 1.27 million votes, more than all other minor candidates combined. This was the most successful result for a third party presidential candidacy since 2000. It was the best showing in the Libertarian Party’s history by vote count.

Gary Johnson ran a good campaign last time, making some very good speeches. But, he had a fraction of the funding of the other party candidates and got ZERO media coverage. With no main stream name recognition, he had no chance to win.

This year is likely to be the same. But, like last time, I’ve been encouraging anyone who feels disenfranchised by either party to vote for him to send a message to the parties that people want something different.

Paul, of course, is the scion of Ron Paul, the most recognizable Libertarian in America.

I know this is pedantic but Libertarians with a capital L are registered Libertarian Party members. Paul is a libertarian with a small L since he only shares its ideology, not its party membership.
