She may not get a week off, but she’d get extra ice cream for the effort+story to tell every Thanksgiving for the rest of her life.

I have the dark dysfunctional flip side to this story (but don’t worry, the outcome was extra ice cream and a story). When I was in third grade the teacher sent home a note that had to be signed (for a class trip, I believe). I was late handing it in because my parents were away. The next morning after they came home I crept to Mom’s side of the bed. She used the mattress for a desk and scrawled a slightly punctured illegible (but still adult looking) signature. Any way, I handed it in and the teacher (who really didn’t seem to like me. She had falsely accused me of cheating on the SRA readers to get to Olive) claimed that I had forged the signature. She made me stand in front of the class and “sign” my mom’s name on the blackboard quite a few times. Then she had the class vote!!! Fortunately there was a class room mom that day who rushed to call my parents. I, of course, was a basket case. The mom took me home and it was resolved by me finishing up the year with a tutor.

Punchline: Unbeknownst to us, my father had beaten her husband out in a business deal.

      Indeed.

Although my 5 year old niece was whining at Christmas about not being able to go back to school for another week...

ah, to be 5 and have a boyfriend

It’s very cute. Kids always write letters. One of my siblings once wrote to the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup people and asked them to send her samples of their products do she could give them her sseal of approval. She was 100 % serious.

My own daughter would leave threatening notes on my and my husband’s pillows at night before she went to bed. The Bad Seed is her favorite movie. We loved them and kept them.

She even switched pens to sign it. Girl is going to go places.

Like the beach, after she writes herself a note to sign out after 4th period.

My brother and I had the system down - he’d sign my dad’s name, I’d sign my mom’s.

Once my mom actually signed something for school and I was terrified they would think it was faked.

That girl is going places like to jail. Shape up, girl, you’ll never get away with it if you don’t get better at forging.

Thank you. This brought a great smile.

    I’m sorry for the hijack:

Today is my grandmother’s birthday, which she spent in the hospital, which led to family drama. Then my boyfriend called to tell me his grandfather has passed away. Both of those things really suck in ways I can’t describe.

I’m not sure how much time work will let me take off to be there for him and his family since it’s not “my family.” Even though his grandpa was more accepting of every body than most people could imagine. He was an absolutely amazing man and every time he spoke I could see where so much of BF’s kindness and compassion comes from. It sure as hell feels like my family.

The thing is I have never been to a Jewish funeral. What is appropriate? Google is letting me down right now.

    Death fucking sucks.

I’m sorry for everything you’re going through. It’s sucky that there’s such a strict definition of family in these cases. The people who mean the most to you aren’t necessarily the closest by blood.

My school started back today. I was one of the few teachers not dragging. The kids were all beady eyed and tired. Last night, they were already posting on Facebook asking if they really had school tomorrow. Yes, you have to go back to school.
