Whenever I check in with the gun-toting nuts on my Facebook feed, their posts are all centered around the idea that gun owners are extremely responsible and competent individuals. After all, they know the technical difference between a rifle and and assault rifle, so only their opinions are valid, right? They know how to use these tools and can be trusted, I guess...And yet, proliferation of gun ownership has the opposite effect—it makes a gun just another thing you have and screw around with. Incidents like this make me think that the person who fired that gun didn’t even understand the consequences of their actions. As if there was some kind of psychological break between ‘carrying around a gun and occasionally firing it at people’ and ‘I am killing someone’. That’s what pisses me off the most, that dipshits feel entitled to a gun apropos of nothing.

Sorry, that’s not totally related to the story and it is a tragedy, I’m just tired of gun culture.

That’s an insightful and disturbingly accurate point.

This happened in my city. So sad and senseless. There was a vigil at the Greek Life Center for her and hundreds of people showed up. She was well-known at UNT for being kind and dependable and she was an only child. So, so awful.

And no. I doubt that the shooter held an open carry permit. Even if he did, drawing and discharging his weapon is still a crime.

It takes some time and effort to get a license. The kind of person responsible enough to go through the process is not the kind of person that does this shit. I’m sure I can’t explain this to people who think anyone who owns guns is a potential murderer, but I’m just as sure that I’m right.

I’ve taken shots which require more time and effort than getting an open carry permit. I don’t think everyone who owns a gun is irresponsible or violent. But saying that getting a permit is hard is laughable.

But they have open carry in Texas! How is it possible none of these drunken sorors was pistol-packing??!

You know what we need? MANDATORY gun-ownership and open carry.

    It’s the only way, amirite?

I believe there are a handful of small rural towns in which gun ownership is mandatory; failure to comply punishable by law.

I wasn’t her best friend by any means, but I knew Sara. We met through mutual friends and eventually ran with the same crowd. I’ve always admired her ability to be kind and compassionate while also being whip- smart and unapologetic in her sense of self. Everyone always says it and it’s always true: The world lost a wonderful soul the day she died. She was stolen from us. We didn’t deserve her loss and she certainly didn’t deserve to be lost.

I don’t care that I’m anti-death penalty. Hang that fucker high.

It says “words were exchanged” - What are people saying happened between the vehicles? Did the admittedly intoxicated sorority girls being the altercation? Did they fire back harshly to some inappropriate comments?

It wouldn’t surprise me. I moved to Dallas a couple years ago for work, and this city is full of aggressively incompetent drivers. Early on I honked at a driver who dangerously cut me off on the highway, and the guy spent the next two miles switching lanes all around me so he could flip me off from every direction. If he’d had a gun I’m certain he would have pulled it. It makes me sick that people with this poor impulse control are now allowed to have their stupid guns wherever they want. I hope whoever did this gets to enjoy a wretched few years in a Texas prison.

Los Angeles is pretty bad, too. No matter how big the traffic injustice I feel has occurred I will not engage. Even a flip of the finger could be a death sentence. As for aggressive drivers, I try not to make eye contact and or I profusely apologize for what ever slight they may have perceived. It’s rough, man.

to be fair, if he had a reasonable expectation that one or more of the people in her car were also armed.... he wouldn’t have behaved that way.

such occurrences are inherently specific to power-imbalance situations.

But we don’t need no gun control laws, nosirree! And if a lovely young woman’s life is ended before it could even begin by some waste of skin who was too shortsighted/idiotic/drunk/sociopathic/all four to care about the consequences of his actions well, that’s the price we have to pay!

You guys need better protest culture. The fact that your streets aren’t constantly packed with people demanding gun reform is bonkers. France protests over everything - maybe take a page out of their book.
