The African Americans who’ve won Oscars, and the role they played.

    Hattie McDaniel - a slave

Sidney Poitier - a laborer helping white nuns

Denzel Washington x 2- an ex-slave who who helps Matthew Broderick/a corrupt cop with gang connections

Jamie Foxx - a singer who struggles with addiction

Forrest Whittaker - corrupt African dictator

Halle Berry - a poor single mother with a husband on death row and an obese son

Louis Gossett, Jr. - a bombastic drill sergeant who helps Richard Gere

Cuba Gooding, Jr - a bombastic pro football player who helps Tom Cruise

Morgan Freeman - a washed up fighter who helps Clint Eastwood and Hilary Swank

    Whoopi Goldberg - a con-artist

Jennifer Hudson - a singer who is a single mom on welfare

    Mo’Nique - abusive welfare mom

Octavia Spencer - a maid in Mississippi who helps Jessica Chastain

    Lupita Nyong’o - a slave

Even when blacks get recognized by the Oscars, its for playing characters in servile roles, who are impoverished or corrupt or trouble by vice.

I agree with your general idea, though I think Ray Charles was about as complimentary as most musician movies are. The addiction just made it more dramatic.

The Academy is out of touch in every aspect that matters. This year is bound to be another disappointment. The best movies I saw this year were ones with zero chance of getting an award. Goddammit, Mad Max: Fury Road deserves all the awards. Is it too late to give the Star Wars The Force Awakens cast nominations? More than likely they’ll go, as usual, to “high brow” films that no one saw that were pure Oscar bait.

Mad Max: Fury Road was a fantastic movie. It made many critics’ ten best lists but I’ll bet Oscar ignores it outside of the Tech Awards.

Star Wars might get a nod only because the Oscar voters want at least one movie that appeals to the casual Oscar viewer.

Well the first step is to support more diversity for writers who aren’t white to right about characters who aren’t white.

And for characters who may or may not be white to be cast as not white.

Actors are the tip of a very big iceberg.

I think that there’s a fundamental problem here, that is, conflating cause and effect. You can’t have a larger number of more diverse nominees if you don’t have a larger number of roles and writing and directing jobs played by Black, Latino, Middle-Eastern, Asian and other minorities first. That’s the real issue. The big movies, the kind of ones who get nominations, they mostly cast white actors and actresses in the key roles, and are written and directed by white people. And, there’s this huge elephant in the room that people seems to be afraid to talk about: most of those casting calls and decisions are made by a considerable bunch of power players in the industry who are self-proclaimed liberals in speech. And, in an even more delicate issue, that almost nobody wants to touch even with an eleven feet pole, a lot of those power players are Jewish, either producers, directors, studio owners... Yes, I said it. It’s an issue of a big bit of hypocrisy. That’s why the one minority which doesn’t have problems getting jobs in the industry and nominations are Jewish actors, actresses, directors and writers. So, they either must to put their money where their mouths are, or stop pretending being so progressive, while keeping this bullshit going on.

Spike Lee needs to do a documentary on the #OscarsSoWhite movement. (Narrated by Ken Burns b/c it’s a Hollywood law that he narrates all documentaries.) The documentary will win an Academy Award. Then, in two years, there will be a fictionalized account of the “Making of #OscarsSoWhite,” starring Michael B Jordan as Spike Lee. The movie will win an Oscar. Then, in 10 years, a studio will reboot the making of movie, which, of course, will lead to a “Behind the Scenes of the Making of Making of” and a “Where Are They Now” on VH1 and a cast reunion on Today. But no Oscar. Which will lead to a 2029 equivalent of a hashtag, thus beginning the Hollywood cycle again. All that’s missing is Marvel, some Roman numerals for sequels, and whatever the opposite of meta is. But not Samuel L. Jackson. Because, thankfully, that mother fucker will be in all three films.

Swap out Ken Burns for Morgan Freeman and I’m in. Burns shouldn’t be allowed near a documentary about race after his romanticized horseshit on the Civil War.

I agree with you. However, given how clueless Hollywood is, it works ironically for Ken Burns to narrate this documentary. And would probably be the only way the movie could get made. Because Hollywood is myopic.
