I get freaked out reading about the time Stephen King’s wife find a stalker in their kitchen with one of King’s book in his hand.

makes me wonder if that bit from Lisey’s Story (where the protagonist, an author, talks about dealing with weirdo fans) was inspired by real life. Wouldn’t surprise me, King wrote his own near-fatal car accident into the Dark Tower series, after all.

Stalkers are just scary. Famous or not famous, it’s scary to have one.

Several years ago I was stalked by a guy whom I went to college with. I started college at 26 and he was a bit older than me, maybe early thirties. When I ignored him, he started sending mail addressed to my dog. Seriously. I guess he knew that would get my attention.

He sent mail to your dog. For some reason, that feels extra creepy.

This is a stupid question, but is some of her makeup application called “contouring” (particularly under/sides of her nose)?

yeah, i would say she probably has some contouring going on! she is a very beautiful woman but her visage is definitely enhanced in one or more ways.

    Jesus.

That’s terrifying, I really wish they could do something more when it comes to stalkers, before violence happens.

**Mrs Beast, stealing Wilda’s account again, for what turned into a super-long comment, even by my long-winded (-fingered?) standards**

Yeah, I think the most surreal conversation I’ve ever had, in a lifetime of surreal conversations, was the one I had waaaay back when I was 15 years old, and my (first) stalker finally did something that I felt would cross the line.

I had called the cops on him once before, when he had been parked outside my house for six hours, staring toward my living-room window (of fucking course, it was a giant picture window hung only with sheers! I had to pass it to get to the washroom, so every time I had to go, I would do my best belly-crawl — on a full bladder! — there and then back again, forever terrified that that would be the time he would be on the porch instead of in his piece-of-shit car), but they told me there was nothing unlawful about him being parked on a public street. Sigh.

He started doing this nearly every day, and after a while, he was emboldened enough to start leaving me things in or under my mailbox (this was not actually a new thing; I had originally been editing pieces of his, and that was where he would leave work for me, so the placement, along with the occasional inky blot of writing, told me exactly who was doing this). I had started staying with various friends even more than I already was (for much of my teens I lived with people other than my family of origin), but I would come home to find a dozen roses, or a card on the table. When I asked where they came from, the answer was always the same: “Oh, I found them outside. You sure must have an admirer!” No, mum and mum’s clueless alkie boyf, not an admirer. Even when my house had more flower arrangements than a funeral home, they still didn’t get it. Even when he left a ‘poem’ comparing me to *shudder* “...a popsicle I want to break apart where the two sticks meet, and put in the freezer for safe-keeping” (after all these years, I don’t remember the rest, but that part is an exact quote).

So I was pretty much on my own with this, but the day I came home to an oddly bulky package from him, I thought I would finally be vindicated. Why, what could have been in the package, you ask? Oh, only a magazine that he had finally been published in, with post-its under his by-lines. Wait, there’s something else: sweet jeebus, it’s his disgusting greasy ponytail!

After I stopped hyperventilating, I called the non-emerg number, figuring this wasn’t exactly an emergency (?). I got an exceedingly sweet rookie on the phone who, after hearing my tale, put me on hold for about ten minutes so he could talk to his supervisor. Finally, he came back on the phone, and with an apologetic and somewhat resigned tone he said:

“I’m so sorry, but there’s nothing we can do. If it had been even the tiniest sliver of his pinky finger, we could apprehend him right now. There’s a law against sending body parts. But it turns out that hair isn’t considered a body part. So sending hair apparently isn’t illegal.”

“I see. Can I please speak to your supervisor?”

“Of course. Sorry I couldn’t help.”

So now I’m on hold again. Supervisor finally picks up, and I ask him if he doesn’t find this to be an escalation of the previous threat. He tells me that even if it is an escalation, the stalker-creep hasn’t touched me, so there’s nothing they can do. At this point, I’m livid, and getting more pissed by the second.

“So, wait. You’re telling me that the watching, the parking, the unwanted ‘gifts’, the ‘poem’, none of that counts for shit? Because he hasn’t touched me? He hasn’t touched me because I’ve been in hiding!”

“Well, just keep doing what you’re doing then, miss. The second he gets a hand on you*, you call us back.”

“Oh, okay. And I guess I’ll just call you while I’m being stabbed or strangled. How fucking helpful. Well, thanks for nothing, and remember: my blood will be on your hands! Have a great day!”

      “I’m sorr—”*click*

The worst part of this story? It happened in California, not long after the time that Rebecca Schaefer was murdered at her own front door by a deranged stalker. That triggered the passage of country’s first anti-stalking statute (646.9 in the California Penal Code, if you’re interested), which was in effect during all of this. According to the cops though, creepo’s behaviours didn’t quite make the cut. The statute was strengthened in 1993, about a year or so after all the shite died down, and according to the current parameters, ths case absolutely would’ve qualified. Oh well; I never liked courtrooms anyway. Le double sigh.

*So I guess even the cop was assuming it would eventually escalate further. Still didn’t matter though.

      I’m so sorry :(

So frustrating and terrifying. After my psycho ex assaulted me a few years back, he had been arrested and there was a restraining order. For weeks after he used to leave notes by my car apologising... the cops told me to keep them, but because he was apologising not threatening me, there was nothing I could do. He used to call me and sit silent on the other end of the phone from his job late at night.

One time he sent me a threatening message on MySpace - remember when MySpace was a thing?!! But it was a random account, said it was from Iran. When I went to the RCMP (Canadian) they sat me in a room with a female officer, who basically laughed at me. You could tell she wasn’t taking me seriously... it was a big waste of her time, and the only reason they were meeting with me at all was because he had already assaulted me and there was a restraining order. There still is a restraining order too... but I’ve moved to multiple different cities since then (this was 8 years ago)

It was around this time my depression started to kick in. He jumped bail about a year after he was arrested. I was notified then... and to this day I have no idea where he is, what happened to him and he’s never been brought to trial for what he did to me.

Every time I now how hear about how inept the police are when it comes to stalking/domestic violence or anything similar... I’m never surprised. Sad, but never surprised.

I would say this kind of batshit insane behavior is rare for her fans if my friend hadn’t seen a girl almost die during her Coachella set. People were pushing so badly that this girl couldn’t breathe. She had to get carried out of the crowd by my friend. I had left the crowd way before this point, and I had to shove people out of my way just so I could leave. People were screaming at me for trying to get in front of them. As I moved to the back of the crowd. It was bizarre. A couple of girls tried to pull my hair, a guy elbowed me in the ribs, and I was pushed and hit by a lot of people until I managed to get out. I had a near violent reaction whenever I saw a flower crown the rest of the weekend.

I’m not even that big of a fan. I like her, but I wouldn’t get violent with a stranger because of her. It was all a little much. I ditched the crowd for an old punk band that was playing nearby. The dads in the crowd were very nice and didn’t push.

I had a stalker this year. Continually trying to contact me on social media even though I blocked them. They somehow got my phone number and threatened me. Shits scary.
