The United States really needs to take the lead in cutting the cartel’s legs out from under them; meaning, we need to legalize drugs and allow production to be shifted here and regulated. As well as that, we need to renege on NAFTA and institute a living wage agreement with Mexico in lieu of the trade agreements. Those are the things we can do.

There also needs to be better and stronger international support of the Autodefensas groups in Mexico. Right now, they’re getting no considerable help from any government institution.

What you’re saying makes sense, but you and I both know that the US will not be legalizing drugs (aside from cannabis) any time soon. I do think it will happen eventually, but it's going to take 50 years or more for attitudes to change. That really is the only thing that can fix this problem, though.

Then we’re going to have 50 years more of this kind of shit. It just depends on what people are willing to accept.

    Extremely sad story.
Where was her security detail (I am completely ignorant to the size of her city).

An outrage, surely. Her surname was Mota? An outrage and an irony, then.

This is totally not relevant to this tragic woman’s death, but I was googling Temixco, the city she was elected mayor of, and it apparently is the centre of Mexico’s Japanese immigrant population and is known for it’s terrific Japanese cuisine.

    Just thought I’d share.

“This isn’t news. Look over there, it’s ISIS!” - Every Presidential candidate, on either side. Worried about terrorists in the Middle East and Europe when there’s an entire country run by organized crime right next door. Of course, they need the status quo to continue in Mexico to keep our drug prices low.

This is not even true. Nobody but the crazy-ass Republicans wants to talk about ISIS. If the Dems are, it’s begrudingly because the media won’t stop badgering them about why they aren’t talking more about “terrorism.”

But, do continue with the hot takes, though.

It is simply breathtaking that government corruption in Mexico is so profound that cartels can openly execute duly elected government officials and have little fear of blowback. And very sad.
