True. For some reason, kids abuse the shit out of their phones, so, not being as rich as Madonna, I have a problem with giving the kid a $600 device that will inevitably be destroyed. My younger kid got my used 5, and broke the screen about 6 months later. It didn't really faze him until I replaced it with a $99 GoPhone. Much whining resulted. The hard thing is, if they're an active kid and you're a working parent, a mobile is absolutely necessary. The relative fanciness of it is where arguments start.

We got our son a refurbished iPhone when he was 10. It was cheaper to it that way then getting a straight cellphone. He's been shockingly responsible with it as opposed to my husband who's destroyed several smartphones.

Don’t worry, Rocco, just wait until you’re 24 and you can lie in bed on a Sunday morning, eating three different types of cake for breakfast and resenting the fucked up relationship with food you have as a result of your mother’s crazy diet restrictions. Or something.

My parents did the same take away crap left on the floor thing for most of my childhood. I kind of wish someone would do this to me now because my bedroom is a mess LOL.

My asshole cat will pee on any laundry left out on the floor or anywhere she can reach. It has to be hung up or in a hamper. That cured us of leaving laundry out! Want her? I'll sub her out for 6 month contracts. ;)

It might be because they did that, that you now have a messy bedroom. My mom was always on my case about picking up and my adult defiance to her as I've learned is to HATE tidying up.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth spent New Year’s together in Australia.

I wonder if her “Sad Christmas Song” brought them back together? It did sound like a koala mating call.

Sweets and chocolate are outlawed, along with dairy products, salt and preservatives

Sooooo they eat undressed spinach leaves all day.

SALT, MADONNA, SALT IS HEAVEN AND REQUIRED FOR LIFE.

    ALSO DAIRY.

    AND CAKE.

However, I’m all for not letting your kids get iPhones young and trying to teach them to not be messy assholes.

    We are at an impasse.

I’m with her except for the dairy. As a Midwesterner, I don’t know how I’d survive. Those kids must have perpetual heartburn.

Madonna sounds very like my mother / birthing unit, who is a horrendous health freak who banned salt and sugar on “health” grounds. Skip forward 30+ years, I’m in hospital (yet again) and have extremely low blood pressure (yet again). Last three visits I’ve been told to up my salt intake to get said blood pressure up, which I mentioned to my mother. “oh, I keep getting told that as well” she says, “same with your Grandma” (who she had put on a salt free diet until her heart failed). “But you’d banned salt from our diets” said I.

“It’s bad for you” says my clearly idiot mother.

“Sweets and chocolate are outlawed, along with dairy products, salt and preservatives. TV is banned and Lourdes got an iPhone only after turning 15. If the kids leave clothes on the floor, the items are taken away.”

Sounds like good parenting to me?

The iPhone is one thing, but the crazy diet really isn’t good. For one there’s so many cases where that sort of intense food control turns out to be really mentally unhealthy. For another, banning all fun/unhealthy food isn’t actually teaching your kids about moderation and making good choices.

I’m sure when Rocco doesn’t clean his room and Madonna yells at him he just says, “Mama, don’t preach, I’m just expressing my self. Stop yelling at me I’m here on holiday. You’re being a borderline schizo. You should thank your lucky star for a son like me. I’ll remember and cherish our time spent together, open your heart and stop being so controlling, I shouldn’t have to justify my love to you. Who's that girl that used to be so cool? I will live to tell all the media about how you're so mean. Right now I know we're not getting along but remember I'm crazy for you."

It’s interesting that Madonna describes Rocco’s attitude towards her career as him not being “satisfied” (as opposed to him not being, say, impressed). Like, do kids that age generally have strong attitudes of satisfaction or dissatisfaction towards their parents’ careers and accomplishments? I feel like the phrasing there reveals more about Madonna than it does about Rocco.

I thought so too. She’s basically saying “I’ve accomplished so much professionally and this kid wants me to parent him too?!”

I’m going to give her a break here, because I’ve seen other famous creative people asked if their kids are among their fans. Her answer is a bit pretentiously phrased, but I think she’s basically giving the same, “LOL, no!” answer I usually see. I think this is a case where the media set up the weird narrative by assuming a 14-year-old ought to like his mother’s music.

My mother does/did the opposite. Everytime I sort out clothes that are worn out or that don’t fit anymore she somehow gets her hands on them and they reappear in my closet. At times it was so bad that I had to sneak stuff out of the house or had to destroy it beyond repair.

Fortunately I am an adult who has her own place, because if anything I left lying around on the floor was taken away I’d be going to work naked.
