“Saudi Arabia was able to commit the crime of executing Nimr because it felt the international community its silent on its gross human rights violations.”

These are our allies. These are who we’ve chosen as partners in the region, because Iran is “dangerous”.

It goes further back. I get that he’s our sitting prez but site the other ones who enjoyed close relations with them as well.

Western citizens put more importance on stability and comfort than human rights. This is nothing new.

      See: China.

I don’t know if it’s just me or because I moved to the Middle East recently, but I feel that more and more people are becoming aware of the absolute insanity that is the Saudi government. The mistake they’re making is that because the world was largely silent before they will continue to be so, but much has changed - including dependency on oil. I really hope that the prediction of their bankruptcy in five years time will ring true. No country deserves it more.

Anyone interested in the topic I also highly recommend the documentary Bitter Lake.

It’s just you. We’ve all been extremely well aware of the insanity of that government.

one provides us with some oil and is a stabilizing force in the ME. The other is trying to enlist an army of cowards to terrorize the EU and kill innocent people in the name of very backwards thinking. So I guess Saudi Arabia is the much lessor of two evils.

      Is really an easy choice.

Does that make ISIS the lessee? What’s the monthly on that? Do they get a discount on the second evil?

You know how Republicans are always complaining about how we never hear from the moderate Muslims? Now they know why.

So true. It sounds like the world lost a good man with the death of the peaceful Nimr, in addition to the other men.

Yeah, the Saudi’s lobbyists are good. They purchased the “Israeli” package from old Uncle Sam. They can do whatever the hell they want to whom they want, and nobody will slap the backs of their hands much less anything more severe.

Pretty much this. It’s not just the oil but all that lovely oil money that buys F16s and whatever else they fancy. It sort of makes them a local proxy against their shared mortal enemy - Iran.

And for those calling out the religious fallacy, the Monarchy are no more devout Muslims than the Bush clan are Christian.

They are all nothing but power hungry sociopathic muderous whores who will stop at nothing to preserve their interests....

Another reason for investing in alternative energy. Get off our dependence on oil and the Saudi govt can go back to being a desert wasteland.

It’ll be reasonably simple to replace Saudi with another source. Canada alone provides 3x the oil they do as it is.

I’d still rather the trains that are just dozens of tanker cars full of oil stop going by my Canadian house, considering what can happen with those.

I am going to say it: the Syrian War is becoming something like the end of WWII. You have Eastern Allies and Western Allies converging upon some singular enemy (in this case, it’s ISIS), each with the ulterior motive of dictating terms for the Cold War ahead.

Viewed through this lens, this execution is kind of like the Russian atrocities committed in the march on Berlin or the use of the atomic bomb. It is an atrocity that is committed with the eye toward warning the other side: we could do this to you afterward.

As much as the Syrian Civil War has been dispiriting experience all around, I’m getting the sinking feeling that the minute it’s over we are looking at a truly scary direct conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Somebody in the world community —the U.S.? Russia? China even?— has to start acting like a grown-up and separate the kids before they kill each other.

I feel it’s more closely related to the slide into WWI which really didn’t have a specific spark, even if we in the US are taught it was because of the killing of Archduke Ferdinand....

Executing 47 prisoners (most of them non-violent) tell me how the Saudis are not among the worst governments you can find?

It isn’t that they’re not the worst. It is that we’re willing to ignore most of it thanks to the ocean of oil they float on.

The Saudis boast about how they are purifying Islam by taking it back to the time of their prophet (much as ISIS claims). The Muslim prophet beheaded between 600 and 800 men in one day after his raid on the Banu Qurayza. The Saudis can’t even copy their prophet correctly.
