I have a strong suspicion that this kid and his mom’s relationship is....how do I put this....unnatural.

I think you called this in the other thread and I can’t help but think you’re completely correct.

Those are the parents other parents live in fear of. I know a couple who wants to be as cool as possible for their kid. When some of his friends showed up at the house with a bottle of booze, she told them, “That’s Okay- but promise me you’ll stay here and drink it and not go out driving or anything.” The dad also joined his son’s frat so they could hang out together more. I believe that’s what the kids call “forcing it.”

Yeah my daughter would go over to the cool Mom’s house. She had a motorcycle and everything and let them drink.. She probably gave them weed too.

Oh, man. My mom never paid my strip club tab.

She did let me use her employee discount, though.

If you read the definitive article about his family, it sounds like he’s pretty smart, which would not be consistent with FAS.

To be fair, if I was running from the law and staying in a Mexican hotel with a lot of cash, I’d have a large-caliber handgun too.

And if the cops were sloppy enough to miss it when they caught up with me, I wouldn’t be giving up the info on it, either.

These are basically the two most sensible things these asshats have done, as far as I know.

So they’d make great international smugglers? It’s already been established that they do bad things well

Having a handgun in Mexico is the last thing in the world you’d want to have. Everything else you can buy your way out of, or in the case of security, just pay for it.

He was facing the rest of a ten year sentence in the US and ran. A handgun in Mexico can get you 30 years there. He may be wishing he had already been extradited.

This kid and his parents are the definition of disaster. But my main beef is with the butt wipe of a judge that allowed the affluenza defense to set this kid free. I’m all for second chances and rehabilitation. However, rewarding bad behavior rarely ends well. I’d like to see that judge’s name get dragged thru the mud a little.

He wasn’t “free”, he was a felon on probation. That’s a keen way for a judge to hedge a bet on a defense, because at any time in the next ten years (like now) even something as minor as missing a meeting can earn a conversion to a full-term prison sentence.

In this case, that defense showed itself to be full of crap, so the guy gets to stare at bare concrete walls for a decade or two, now in two countries.

How do we know that the defense is full of crap? I agree that it is, but honestly, I don’t see how any of what he did here is worse than killing four people. If he got a free pass on *that* because he was too rich to understand the consequences of his actions then (I think?), what changed? Did his family lose all of its money?

When they were divorcing, the Dad claimed she moved Ethan’s bed into her room when he was a teenager...

Dad is a POS too. So grain of salt with anything he says. But these events back him up, a bit.
