      Can you elaborate your point

These are The Pink Houses in Brooklyn. They are actually better than most projects I have had the misfortune to visit, and you wouldn’t even think they are livable most likely.

So again what is the point you are trying to make?

The “legacy” of Castro’s revolution is that it was a pipe dream to begin with. Cuba never was a sustainable worker’s paradise, always relying on Soviet subsidies.

The thing is, it could have been sustainable. Cuba has the agricultural resources to sustain itself, but Castro never really glommed on to the fact that economic liberalization combined with regulation and progressive taxation builds a better state than true centralization.

My theory is that if Vladimir Lenin had survived longer, and his post World War I efforts to privatize some portions of the Russian economy that Stalin scrapped shortly after coming to power had been followed through on, the history of the 20th century would have been radically altered. Not only would the Soviet Union and states like Cuba have been healthier economically speaking, I suspect that the Cold War wouldn’t have been nearly as tense.

I subscribe to the first part of your theory, but consider the invasion of the USSR while WWI was still going on. Enemies in the war outside Russia were allies inside Russia. It’s clear that implacable property owners who control the “free world” as their property will not permit a good example to break out.

I’m not sure Lenin’s efforts would have bore fruit even if he had lived. The Russian economy was frozen in time practically back to Catherine II. And further destroyed by war. It would have taken many years to develop the way he wanted it to (industrialization, healthy banking sector). He was essentially trying to create the atmosphere of England at the dawn of the industrial revolution (private enterprise supported by healthy banking sector in turn supported by the crown) but there were centuries of economic development leading up to that and raw material from the colonies propping it up. And I don’t think anyone else involved would have had the patience to wait as long as it would take. Plus, he claimed he planned to nationalize after they grew and were healthy (although this may have been appeasement).

“When I show these to my grandson, he says, ‘What good did it do? Look at you now. You’ve got nothing.’”

My mom leaves this on my voicemail at least once a week. Wouldn’t read too much into it.

Don't believe a thing your mother says, child. She can't get past what you did to her figure. Change your phone number. You'll be happy you did.

With buffoon balloon Trump spending all his time trying to be elected chief asshole, I can’t help think it might be keeping him from trying to develop Cuba with one of his hideous developments? Although he probably has evil minions looking into it, maybe one of his dipshit sons. Oh well.

Historically, countries that succumbed to Socialism found that the ultimate consequence was that the system was corrupt and only the unscrupulous at the top reaped the benefits while the 99% ended up functioning as cogs in the wheel. Citizens are arbitrarily detained or murdered by police who are usually exonerated. There are fewer jobs for those who are born with darker skin. This is very different from what we in the US are experiencing under Capitalism. At least that’s what we have been told.

....at least under Communist countries, you knew it was a sham, because their leaders were called “First Among Equals”.....this defies logic....if everyone is equal, how can someone be “first”?

Ah yes. The capitalist end game of dying with stuff. Good to see the young Cubans are picking up the best values out there.

Cuba is beautiful but it’s people and culture are unparalleled. I hope the best for them as they embrace new opportunity.
