I don't know any other way to say this but why did they rescue this fetus? It sounds like if it lives it will be horrifically damaged and who will care for it? Terribly sad.

TN law requires physicians to rescue infants “born alive” after a botched abortion. But not prematurely born infants. Parents are allowed to ask physicians to provide only palliative care.

I know somebody who had, what I guess is the only correct term, a psychotic break when she was 8 months pregnant. She tried to then kill the baby by repeatedly punching her stomach and then throwing herself off some stairs. It had something to do with her not being able to take her meds while pregnant, and fortunately both the mom and the baby lived and the baby is now a very happy and healthy 10 year old.

I honestly dont know how that lady would have survived had she been charged with attempted murder and what not. It is fucking beyond ridiculous that the state can do that for a fetus. Yes, what she did was not right and I genuinely feel bad for this baby that will now live a life full of medical issues, but how is jailing her making anything better?! Insanity on all counts.

There is going to be a rise in the number of cases like this due to the limit in access to abortion and birth control services. More and more women and girls are going to attempt self abortion. Making it harder for women and girls to get abortions won’t stop them from doing dangerous and risky things to get one. Even when abortions were outlawed people still did them on their own.

There was a very interesting article on slate.com that described a case where a woman died from an abortion in the 1950s. I suggest people read it.

Moral issues aside, even from a pragmatic POV, denying abortions leads to suffering for both women and children. That’s not folklore but well established fact in the US and elsewhere.

Germany has half the abortions per capita as the US, even though abortions are covered under universal health care free of charge and available everywhere within a 30 minute drive. That’s due to better and mandatory sex ed all throughout school, free contraception for poor citizens, health care (and maternity care) for every woman, social safety nets that help mothers and don’t exist in the US and so on.

There is a way to decrease abortion numbers severely without trampling on the human rights of a single woman. The people who always crusade “for the children” just aren’t interested in that, because they’re not really interested in “the children”, these are just a means to an end, as is evident given how easily those valued children get discared and thrown aside as soon as they are born.

Pragmatic POV just points to countries where abortion is illegal yet the rate of abortions is higher than the US (off the top of my head, Brazil). Alas, logic and facts have no place in the abortion debate in the US.

Nope. But lack of money, lies from “pregnancy crisis centers,” abusive family, fear of being tracked by protesters, fear of being shot up by an anti-abortion terrorist, lack of medical health services (did she have preparation psychosis?) and any general medical health services (did she have access to birth control? How long did she know she was pregnant?) all could have been contributing factors.

I just moved to Nashville and do you have ANY idea how hard it is to get even an STD testing when you’re uninsured? The waitlist at planned parenthood is over a month long. Coming from Boston, it’s appalling to me how little consideration sexual health is really given all around. And not even for just women- if I’ve had a hard time finding STD testing is it fair to assume most dudes probably just said “fuck it” and aren’t getting tested at all? UGH it’s just really awful... and this story makes me so incredibly sad

Pretty sure I have an STI right now and I have said “I don’t fucking care” for about a week, and I live in a good state. Unless a guy’s dick is falling off, we’re not getting tested for anything.

And I’m not saying that’s cool, I’m saying it is a huge problem. We need a better healthcare system when dudes are willing to just go through life with a dick disease. Dick diseases should be off the table.

Damn, that sucks. Sorry to hear that.

Having been going to a PP clinic here in SoCal, I wish everyone still could have the access to them that I do. It’s why I will always support fundraising/donations to PP. Getting an STD appointment should only be a matter of a few days, not a frickin’ month.

It’s been a year, and she’s been in jail, yet her attorney ha syet to meet with her, even as she goes to trial?

Here’s one thing we know about Yocca: SHE IS POOR AS SHIT. And hey, I’m guessing that goes at least partway to solving the mystery of why she chose to try and abort via a hanger at 24 weeks: POOR WOMAN, NO MONEY, ABORTION FROM A DOCTOR IS FUCKING EXPENSIVE.

I wouldn’t know where to start. Gofundme doesn’t allow funding for people charged with crimes. Tennessee is sure as hell not going to help, since the state is charging her on the baby’s behalf. You might try contacting PP in Tennessee to see what they recommend.

If the baby is able to survive outside the womb (even if an incubator is required), it’s too late to abort. You had 24 whole weeks (aka 5.5 months) to make that decision. If you let the baby grow that far along, you’ve already made the choice. I don’t support 1st degree murder charges, however, that’s just going way too far.

The laws are set up to be incredibly restrictive to access to a legal abortion. That’s the whole point of shutting down the clinics that used to provide this legal service. She didn’t “wait” 24 weeks to make “her choice”, she was backed into a corner by old white men to where she felt her only option was sticking a coat hanger into her genitals and now they want to put her in prison for murder. You don’t understand the problem and you shouldn’t be commenting on this, at all, ever.
