    What is this Pope, some kind of religiousy Catholic dude?

    I was gleeful that the Pope did some Christ-like things that rubbed the American religious community the wrong way. Nine out of ten American Christians wouldn’t let the real Jesus into their home. Some socialist Arab talking about feeding the hungry and curing the sick, no way! The Pope’s religious texts told him that helping the less fortunate is inherently good, and that’s a part of the booklet that other Christians may have forgotten.

    But ultimately the Pope’s morality is not inherent to him; it comes from a book—even if it happens to be the nicest book—from thousands of years ago. Those books tell you whom to stone, whom you can fuck, and how many times a woman has to bathe after menstruating before the Devil goes away. Thinking that he was universally ethical was a mistake. He doesn’t have to take responsibility for his ethics; he is incidentally ethical every time his organization, ancient text, or another charismatic leader gives him something ethical to say or do.

    Being religious, he shouldn’t be credited for his good deeds any more than he should be reprimanded for his bad deeds. They’re not his own actions to begin with. God works through him.

      Yeah, what the fuck is that? What “right” to parents? Like, when someone dies, do they make the surviving spouse pay a fine in that person’s name, because they orphaned their child? Do they have to do jail time? That would be good. Like those mothers who are victims of abuse and are thrown in jail along with their abusive spouses, for “failing to protect their children” from the shitstain’s abuse.

    See one would think that “supporting the family” would mean giving all loving families the same rights and social as well as legal safety and stability. But I guess what “supporting the family” actually means is trying to rip apart loving families that don’t conform to a narrow definition of what is acceptable according to a particular religious doctrine. Because let’s be honest - people who are against marriage equality and adoption don’t really want gay people to be in any kind of relationship.

      Slovenia had another, similar vote in 2012 when we were supposed to change the definition of family to include anything except a man, a woman and kids; it didn’t go through. From their POV same-sex couples with children really aren’t families. When they say “supporting the family” they mean it, but they mean just “traditional families”.

      Also, the coalition was just against adoption, and that is why the law wasn’t passed now. The majority of people still do not want gay people to adopt children, but they are lobbying for their being able to get married.

    I love telling this story to anti-gay marriage Conservatives. I have a friend from college who decided that he wanted to be a woman. He took hormones for awhile, changed his name to a feminine name, and started wearing woman’s clothing. Here’s the “catch” for many people. Despite my friend wanting to be a woman, he’s still VERY attracted to women NOT men i.e. he’s not gay. Eventually he got married to a woman, and together they have had 2 children - all still VERY legal, even before the Supreme Court ruling this year. They have a house in the suburbs and the kids are very well cared for and don’t lack for anything.

    So tell me why having 2 moms or 2 dads as the parents is such a bad thing?
