Call me a victim blamer all you want. Common sense says get a lawyer! I'm not blaming her for getting raped, I'm blaming her for not paying attention to every crime show she's ever seen. Always get a lawyer. Cops are always lying and want to get you in trouble.

Oh yeah. It’s totally that easy. It’s not like lawyers charge or anything.

      Fuck off.

I’m sure he will. I’m not sure why people are waiting to see it, though.

“The two officers who charged her with lying were never disciplined, though Mason expressed regret for the way he handled the case, telling reporters, “It wasn’t her job to try to convince me. In hindsight, it was my job to get to the bottom of it — and I didn’t.””

Aw, that’s okay, slugger! You tried your best! And hey...it’s not like your act of crass, ignorant, completely irresponsible and reprehensible dismissal actually caused any serious damage! Buck up, li’l guy! Your lame-ass half apology’ll certainly help those women who were raped after this feel a lot better, I'm sure, ya miserable little bastard.

I wonder how they picked $150,000. To me, it doesnt seem like enough. I’d also like to think she got a letter of apology from everyone involved plus the mayor—written on very nice stationary—and a handshake agreement that if she gets any traffic tickets, the cops will forget about them just like they forgot about her case.

One of the cops who didn’t even try to offer a half-arsed apology. Ya man Jerry:

I think eventually we’ll all be wearingtiny cameras that will be live streaming at all times to a private feed. Should eliminate an awful lot of crime.

This has happened in Oregon and Maryland as well, where a woman and a girl, respectively, were found guilty of filing false rape charges that were ultimately proved true.

The Maryland case had a particularly satisfying ending. The daughter, now pregnant, discovered that her stepfather had videotaped his years of rape and abuse, so she showed the tapes to her mother. The mother then blew the stepfather to bits with his own shotgun. The judge essentially sentenced the mother to probation.

Probably one of the most heart-breaking parts was her own foster mother called up the cops to say she thought “Marie” was lying about the rape because she did not seem distraught enough and felt she was trying to get attention. Later in the Marshall Project article it mentions Marie was a victim of previous abuse and regularly dissociated (emotionally disconnected) to protect herself. Also Marie had moved out immediately when she was 18, had a difficult relation with the foster mother and as soon as she moved out the foster mother started fostering other kids and became distant. It’s painful but explicable when a cop doesn’t believe, but when a parent doesn’t... The transition housing even made her go up to the other former-foster children tenants and tell them all that she was a liar. What a total mess!

How did they only give her $150,000???

I asked myself this question and then realized the most horrifying thing about this case. It doesn’t say what race Marie is but we know she’s poor at the very least. If I, a rich white girl with a family to back me up, was raped and the police didn’t believe me it would taken a lot more seriously and have a much bigger damage number attached than $150k. But no one gives a shit when a poor woman of color gets raped, especially not the cops.

Jesus. The police basically used the fact the young woman was vulnerable and traumatized to bully her into not only retracting her true report of rape, but to “confess” to the court, her friends; her neighbors. She lost her housing and fled, feeling like a pariah and questioning her own sanity. Because there were minor inconsistencies in a few details of her story and a woman fostering her called and expressed doubt, or something?

        Jesus.

The full article is long, and well worth reading.
