Is it wrong to not care how murderers and rapists are treated in prison? Because I couldn't care less.

Well, if it were all murderers and rapists in prison I probably wouldn’t give much of a shit either, but that’s not the reality of the situation.

If prison aims to rehabilitate people so that they may successfully enter back into society

    That’s adorable.

I can’t wait to welcome a pedofile rapist back into society. Heck they can come over my house and play with my children! I mean they are rehabilitated right?

Wow, I didn't realize that all prisoners were pedophile rapists. Did we finally start putting drug addicts in rehab instead of jail? Progress!

Prison is almost exclusively for punishing and getting people into a never ending cycle of poverty and incarceration. Rehabilitation hasn't been a goal in ages.

      because that would:
      1. Cost money.
      2. Reduce the availability of low wage workers that can only work in menial jobs as a result of a conviction.
      3. Dilute the “tough on crime” persona Republicans have been building since Reagan.

You also know that prisoners count when it comes to determining populations, congressional districts, congress persons, etc. right? You essentially get districts where a few voters have a lot more power than others because most of the population can’t vote.

“nearly all sentences in solitary will be capped at three months”

This sounds like the right approach. Just enough time to drive them literally insane, then back into the general population.

So what do you do with the criminals who are violent towards the rest of the prison population and the prison guards? There are some real fucking animals in there.

Put them in the white collar section?

Or, if the prison is running low on Enron CEO’s, put them in cells separated by bars, where they can still talk to each other. Solitary confinement is the kind of barbaric punishment that does not belong in the vocabulary of a civilized nation.

At the end of the day, do we REALLY want NY safer? It’s getting bad enough to where people actually want to live in NYC. Let’s make a push for the good ol’ days, when TV shows and movies based their plots on how terrifying it was just walking out the door.

Growing up, my brother and I used to collect crack vials in Central Park - obviously, we had no idea what they were - and our mother would be all “Put those DOWN!”

But you could still lock someone up in solitary for three months? I mean, they’ll get books and telephone calls and edible food, but three months alone? I’m a writer and an introvert, and that still sounds like torture. Baby steps, I guess...

This is a going to have a huge impact on tv shows and movies set in prisons. And not a good impact.
