Chill out everyone. Put down your pitchforks and extinguish your torches. They named it Liberty Island. Liberty is good, ergo whatever they do there is good.

I love how cynical the naming fo the place was. I can just see the project developers sitting in the office coming up with this. lol

However, according to Lois Epstein of the Wilderness Society, because Hilcorp will be drilling in federal waters, Alaska will not receive any of the revenue.

Alaska will see revenue, just not directly. I’d bet almost all of the jobs created will go to Alaskans. Not that I support the project, but it’s a bit disgeinuous to pretend that there is no financial benefit to Alaska for this. There are all kinds of taxable goods and services this sort of project will create directly and indirectly from spin-off.

He is talking about, you know, wealth, not flying j jobs, or hotel reception. You know, the consolidation of wealth that, as a whole, our laws get passed to defend even though we, us, a vast majority of america defends the right to make as much as you can, will never reap the benefits of the profits. It’s trickle down economics, except we figured out how to stop the leak. I mean trickle.

The guy gave each of his employees a 100k bonus for increasing his wealth. That can buy a house in a lot of areas. This guy should be celebrated. If he were a Walton, he’d cut hours.

I am not a fan of the environmental impact of this peoject, but if it's happening I would rather it do to this guy.

...proposes trucking 83,000 cubic yards of gravel by ice road to a hole cut in the sea ice. The gravel will be dumped into 19 feet of water, forming the so-called 23-acre “Liberty Island,”...

    Ah, what could go wrong?

Spilling gravel on the dirt? Ice roads are in use every day all winter throughout Alaska and northern Canada

If by “easier” you mean “still being fucked into poverty by thieving multinationals that only pay lip service to trickle-down opportunity”, then you’re right.

No, I mean easier as in ‘a thing most of them they absolutely have to purchase in order to get to their jobs and earn money has just become significantly cheaper.’ That clear enough for you or would you like to put a frustrated little dollop of snark on top?

The $100,000 bonus thing really is pretty incredible right? If it were say, Apple, instead of an oil company we would be petitioning to induct these dudes in to sainthood.

I know someone who just started working there, lowing on the totem pole and still got that 100k bonus. It’s pretty incredible, haven’t heard or seen anything like it in the history of this field/any company of this size. Everyone else in Houston is extremely jealous.

Shouldn’t this be a normal thing in 2015?

    :(

Earlier this month, Hilcorp’s billionaire owner, Jeff Hildebrand, gave each of his 1,381 employees a $100,000 bonus after the company doubled its output to more than 150,000 barrels daily, Forbes reported.

I had the feeling the author was betting on the fact that the readers wouldn’t notice that detail. Why else post fairly routine news about a small player in the oil industry on website that covers technology news ....

“Texas Oil Company Plans to Build an Entire Island Off the Alaskan Coast”

The headline sounded quite qlickbaitish to me , you know OMG they’re building an entire island like no had done that before...
