The Saudi patriarchy must be relieved, as this will certainly alleviate any pent-up revolutionary pressure resulting from decades of entrenched misogyny.

Relieved? I’d expect it to worry the hell out of them. They made it nearly impossible for women to campaign, and seven of them still won. What does that say about how many voters rejected their values?

So a few decades ago there was no patriarchy in Saudi Arabia? You realise all human societies are patriarchies right? and have been since, well ever.

Let me know when their women stop wearing bags on their heads and they stop imprisoning gays so I can get ready to clap. Until then, this is not a culture any free Society would want to import.

Weren't gays oppressed in US less than 15 years ago? Not exactly a model culture either.

They’re still oppressed, since there is no universal protections. But they can get married now — right before their bosses fire them/their landlords evict them for putting their “gayness” in everyone’s faces by getting married - and if they live in a state or city that doesn’t have anti-discrimination laws that include sexual orientation as a protected class, they can’t do shit about it.

I think it’s misleading to say that “women can now vote in Saudi Arabia” since we are talking about a fraction of Saudi Arabian women who are actually registered to vote. Not to take away from the significance of this, but it’s not like they’re suddenly enfranchised.

On the plus side, they are as enfranchised as men when it comes to voting since their votes are meaningless (in that elected officials power is subservient to the absolute monarch and municipal positions are set up specifically to have no power).

They only had 25% overall voter turnout, and this is only the 4th local election since the 60’s. Ain’t nobody particularly enfranchised over there.

ETA: I would still never equate men and women’s positions in the Kingdom though, not in any one regard and certainly not in aggregate.

This is nothing more than image management by Saudi Arabia. I hope none of you actually believe that 1.) Women can actually vote in Saudi Arabia, and 2.)if they could vote, do you really thing their votes would be counted?

It's at least a step in the right direction even if it is just meant to be lip service to the outside world.

Congratulations! Saudi Arabia has improved it’s electoral system leaps and bounds past the U.S.A. I still believe we’ll have a fairer representation here as well. Maybe in my lifetime?

Are we sure they elected a woman and not just Lindsey Graham in a Burka?
