I don’t know, it definitely depends on the brand. I’m ashamed to admit that I’d vote Cruz if it meant a lifelong supply of Giordano’s. I just slapped myself btw.

If Donald Trump’s campaign somehow implodes or he goes independent, Cruz has positioned himself to pick up all his xenophobic supporters. He’s Trump-lite.

We thought Cruz had zero chance before Trump, but now he’s polling at #2 and #3.

I really hate this smarmy fucker.

He admitted that was his strategy in a fundraiser. It’s been suggested that this was an intentional leak.

Trump supporters are more stupid than evil, with Cruz it seems to be the opposite. I don’t actually know any Trump supporters. Trump at least effectively uses charisma and bravado which I can see some people falling for.

You get what you give, Ted. When you have nothing but contempt for anyone but yourself then you get it thrown back at you.

Hey Ted. No matter how many dollars you throw at people, you aren’t going to get anyone who says: “Ted Cruz is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I’ve ever known in my life” and not sound like he/she was brainwashed.

To borrow another quote from the movie that gave me my Gawker user name...

“It’s not that Ted Cruz is hard to like. He’s IMPOSSIBLE to like!”

To be fair, no one in the GOP is striving to be called the “kindest” anything - most would consider the word an insult.

I don’t know that it has been useless. Ted Cruz is surging in Republican primary polls right now, and I think it definitely has something to do with the fact that he has been the most deft in his approach to handling Donald Trump.

Look I’m not saying he’s not a terrible human being, because he is, but people writing off Cruz in political battles only to wind up getting curb stomped because they were lazy about fighting him is kind of the story of his rise to prominence in the Republican Party.

The dude beat out the guy endorsed by Rick freaking Perry in the Republican primary for a senate seat in Texas. Rick Perry’s cabal had, until 2012, essentially owned in entirety all Republican primaries in the state of Texas for years.

He effectively relegated Jon Cornyn, a fairly prominent voice in the Republican wing of the Senate, to junior senator status within a year or so of arriving in D.C., and now he’s emerged from the shitshow of Republican contenders, including names that have been potential presidential nominees for years before Cruz was even a consideration for Senate, to be one of two candidates, Rubio being the other, the establishment might decide to back, even though he’s not a very establishment Republican.

Cruz is gonna be the GOP candidate and everyone is gonna be oh so surprised when he steamrolls Hillary, since she’s been spending all her time preparing for a coronation instead of a campaign.

The worst part is the fucker isn’t even qualified to be POTUS.

I don’t know that he will steamroll Hilary but I do think he is the Republican with the best chance of winning. He won’t make the same out of touch mistakes Romney did and he won’t be a debate pushover like Bush and McCain were.

Cruz is going to win the nomination. Just watch. He’ll lose a general election, but he’s the most palatable Republican candidate, and if that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know about the state of the GOP in 2015, nothing will.

No way. He’s second in the polls now but so much will change. He could melt before then. He just doesn't look like a leader of a nation.

Of course he doesn’t look like the leader of a nation. He’s a self-promoting, flaming asshole. He has no chance of winning, but that’s sort of my point. The rest of them are so incompetent that relative to them, he’s a reasonable option for the GOP. That’s the best they can scrape up.

There was a neat NPR article on the Cruz campaign. I find him politically repulsive, but I was quite impressed with how his team is using social media and gamification.

I’m not sure the approach was as well suited to his target voter market, but in the hands of a more appealing candidate it could have been dynamite.

Cruz team banking on turning out the evangelicals to vote en masse but he’s got a helluva lot more folks that hate him than those that would vote with him. That strategy not gonna work.

Exactly. My point was that the strategy was a good one, just not for Cruz specifically. It’s an excellent use of social media tech for campaigning.
