I didn’t realize that NPR didn’t have a lot of women. Whenever I think of NPR, I think of all their outstanding female hosts and correspondents. And their fantastic names. (Looking at you, Ofeibea Quist-Arcton)

Leila Fadul. Windsor Johnston. Eleanor Beardsley. Ophira Eisenberg. Just saying their names gives me a bit of a shiver, they’re so pleasant to say.

Reporting from DAKAR. (I always say it with her...)

As for the missing women, I think most of it is behind the scenes. No one makes it very far up the editorial/administrative ladder.

Remember that time that Diane Rehm accused the only Jewish-American presidential candidate of not only dual citizenship, but dual loyalties to the United States and Israel? And remember how she then blamed it on a random Facebook comment?

Ha, good times, Diane. Good, racist times.

Considering it was in June, yes.

“This is the first time in nearly 36 years that this show has ever been called out on an error, a terrible, terrible error, like this. I am so sad and so embarrassed that this has happened, but it was a mistake and I take full responsibility for it. I should have probed further. I should have looked into it myself when the doubts came into my own mind.”

Rehm said the idea of dual citizenship, “did not seem to me to be such an outrageous question because people have it.” But, she added, “The terrible mistake was not realizing that these lists had been put up by anti-Semitic groups.” None of her producers, she said, were aware of the lists or their source.

    More from WAMU:

Yore added, “We are excited about the ideas we are developing and the talent we are considering. We are committed to finding a successor who will honor Diane’s legacy and the qualities listeners treasure about her show – civil discourse and deep conversations about the issues of the day with listeners as part of the conversation – while also reflecting changing audience needs and habits.”

Discussing what might be next for Rehm, WAMU’s Yore said she is considering many options, from “a speaker series, a new show or podcast, and other ways of connecting with her most loyal listeners.”

So maybe not quite a retirement yet!

I’m always amazed at how she can talk to pretty much anyone in such a calm and civil manner. I’d never be able to do it. She’s a national treasure!

I’m so saddened by this announcement, but happy it’s on her own terms.

My fav Diane Rehm memory was when a guest forgot to turn the ringer off on his cellphone and it rang not once but twice (!!) during his interview and she called him terribly rude. I love her.

I remember this! And there was another not too long ago where someone left early and she was PISSED. I don’t remember the specifics, but girlfriend was unamused.

You are right—it is a huge loss and having women be so central to a news organization in a very serious way is an inspiration.

We still have my favorite lady, Marty Moss-Coane on WHYY. I linked an interview she did with Mary Beard which I LOVED.

After her husband’s death, she also became an advocate for right-to-die legislation; in February she’ll release a fourth book about the topic.

On this note, I can’t imagine how awful it would be to watch for ten days while your husband starved himself to death because he wasn’t able to choose the way he wanted to leave the world.

Sorry, when did her husband tell you that? I’m curious to hear it from someone who witnessed his death firsthand. Or maybe Diane told you herself? Either way, please share.

I’ve heard people mock her because of her quavering voice—implying she’s from a generation long past and that she’s over the hill. I guess it would be accurate to say she’s from a former generation that is probably more conservative than those of the Jezebel readership. Nevertheless, I drive for a living and value her interviews with politicians and authors, especially. Because of her show, I feel more informed and that’s partly due to her attempts to provide balanced viewpoints of the specific issues she examines on her show.

Also, I remember hearing her speak about her childhood and how adamantly her father opposed higher education, at least for her. I admire her very much for her accomplishments and her obvious work ethic. Glad she will be working through this upcoming election. If only Jon had waited a bit longer....

I don’t hate her voice because it suggests she’s old. I couldn’t care less how old she is. I hate her voice because it has a nails-on-a-chalkboard quality that physically hurts my ears.

She has a quavering voice because she had a stroke. She’s spoken about how devastating it’s been for her to hear her own voice since it happened.

Love me some Diane Rehm, but you guys, you have to see her house, its chintzy AF but somehow still glorious: http://www.homeanddesign.com/2011/05/01/at-...

At least now she can spend more time chilling in it!

I’m so upset about this. I love Diane and feel like she’s helped me develop a much more nuanced view of the world than I would have otherwise. And what will I do without the Friday News Roundup?

Here’s one of my favorite recent programs from her. (Wow, did not realize this was in April. This year has flown by.)

Called into her show a few times over the years when I was stationed in Virginia. She’s class. She put in the work for many years. Sad to see her leave this work but happy with what she gave us. Everyone has to move onto other things in life eventually.

She interviewed Mr. Rogers once, and after his intro, it went like this:

    D: Hello... Mr. Rogers.

    R: Hello... Diane.

D: You know. we. Probably. have. two. of the slowest. voices. in media.

Slow, but always worth the wait.

That’s wonderful! I speak really quickly and even kind of frantically so I love listening to her talk. She’s a marvel.

She interviewed the actor Jesse Eisenberg lately and he could not deal with the pace of her voice. I think he kept thinking she was done talking and then interjecting. So awkward.
