No offense, but I have to disagree with you here.

IMO it doesn’t matter where the data or source material comes from, it just matters that the story is told. With that in mind I can think of few publications more outspoken than Jezebel when it comes to our super-marginalized communities.

I’m proud to say I am a daily consumer of Jezebel.

Yeah, I still don’t know what to make of this in the larger context. The rates for these crimes among NFL players is lower than it is among the general population so it’s not really a problem you can link to football. I suppose I can get on board with the idea that you want the NFL to act extra-judicially here(although I generally think that’s a lousy idea) but even then it sort of smacks of “The only guys I want to see giving each other brain damage on Sundays are morally upstanding”.

This is why I’m glad I’m not a football fan.

I agree on the stats thing, but the difference is that these men are held up as heroes. Kids (and grown men and women) wear their jerseys and actively root for them. When they are accused (or convicted) of crimes — not just sexual assault and DV, mind you, but things like drunk driving — and it is laughed off or viewed as not a big deal, it normalizes that behavior. “He brutally beat and threatened a woman, but he can throw such a block, let’s let it slide.” That is not a lesson the public needs reinforced further.

Really source on that? Because according to you over 1 in 40 men beat their significant other which seems pretty high to have not seen Jezebel.com do articles on it every month

Nope, real name. He was involved in the Miami Dolphins bullying scandal a couple of years ago. He got cut and picked up by Rex Ryan when he took over in Buffalo because of course he did and because fuck Rex Ryan.

The NFL is like the GOP, I can’t figure out why women* still support it.

You know.... this is a big reason why I just can’t watch the NFL or sports in general anymore. To think of how monstrous some of these men really are, the things they do in their private lives, the extreme fantasies they no doubt make reality. I just can’t.

      These are not my heroes.

Same can be said about movies , music, or politics.

If you made a list of of people accused of sexual/domestic assault just like the NFL list, then you would also have Bill Murray, John Lennon and Bill Clinton on that list.

Step one: Take the kind of guy attracted to physically violent play as a late adolescent (ie, a guy who wants to play high school football).

Step two: Train him till he’s good enough that he can make a decent amount of money

Step three: put him in an environment where his aggression is his profession

Bonus to step three: Because so much money is riding on his aggressive tendencies, science can be applied to increase both his aggression and ability to do damage

Step four: Treat him like a normal guy with a normal job, but with a bunch of money and people to look out for his ability to continue making himself (and by extension them) money.

You’ve basically crated a human pit bull. Trained and socialized to turn to aggression as a solution.

I’m getting this book for every rabid football fan I know. They should at least understand how their hobby is hurting our culture and the health and well-being of boys and girls alike.

            Merry Christmas!
