New York City currently already pays for textbooks, computer supplies, certain special education programs, and school buses for its private schools.

    Why?

Yeah, I was surprised at that. I thought the point of private schools was to fund books and supplies using student fees so that they could, in turn, teach subjects prohibited in public schools (e.g. religion) or otherwise deviate from the regular program of study. It seems to siphon off funds from public schools.

this is honestly the more egregious issue

security i can kind of understand (along with special ed) because parochial schools don’t have a lot of extra cash

but textbooks and computers should be covered by the schools & parents, and there really is no excuse for school buses unless they are also serving a nearby public school

    This reeks of shit.

I guess they are covered when it comes to nice facilities, updated books and the like but they want the city to fork over money for SECURITY?

    No.

Have you actually been to a private religious school? They’re usually quite dilapidated with many students being on financial aid.

When you reach the social point where you’re mayor of NYC, retaining that power becomes more important than helping people.

This is NY politics 101. It is always corruption.

So what? That’s tax money that goes to public schools. Just because you choose not to use the public schools that tax money rightfully goes to doesn’t mean that tax money follows you to a private school.

You might as well say “I pay taxes to maintain roads, so the government should spend some of that tax money on a private road so me and my buddies can use it.”

Are these private school kids not also citizens of the state that they reside in? Are they not to be afforded safety and security because they decided to go to religious school - which are higher targets for hate crimes? Have you ever actually been a student at a private religious school where they had to install large boulders in front of the lobby to prevent crazy people from driving a car into the school (and this was in the early 90s!)? The outrage is misplaced here. The outrage should be the fact that security is even needed.

I went to a private, Christian school and would have never expected the city to fund anything regarding my education. It is a private school for a reason and it is up to that particular school to pay for its own security.

Eh, as someone who works in a nonprofit in the city almost half of our funding is discretionary Council funding, the Council funds a ton of things for its constituents and $20 million isn’t exactly that huge a deal when you consider that NYC’s overall budget for FY 2016 is 79.9 billion, which puts this at .025% of the overall budget. NYC is so huge that if NYC was its own state, it would have a bigger budget than 45 other states.

I just can’t muster up much of an outrage for this one, though of course I’d prefer that money to go to the causes I support.

I get that, but imagine they decided to take that $20 mil and renovate an entire fucking school, or pay for 200 extra experienced teachers in the district. It would make a small but measurable difference to the public schools, even if it doesn’t make a big difference as far as the total budget.

It’s also the principle of the thing, and the precedent that they’re setting for other districts. It’s not OK to pay for private things with public money.

I have zero problem with providing a pittance for security, but why the hell is the government paying for the books/computers/etc of private religious schools? Are they at least required to make basic concessions for taking government money like having non-bigoted hiring processes? Or do they run off with the money and get to be as racist/biased as they want?

Might was well eliminate private housing and property too while we’re at it based on the logical conclusion of your argument. So what if the city provides some security. The alternative are private police forces, or perhaps militias? How’s that working for people in places like Syria and Afghanistan?

I mean, obviously want these private school kids to have adequate security, but...don’t they charge tuition and shit so they can pay for their own things? Am I missing something?

On the one hand, I understand why some people are upset or skeptical about this.

On the other hand, if you are, say, a Muslim student at a Muslim parochial school, then it seems unreasonable to burden the school and parents with crippling security costs just because rampant bigotry and hate crimes make them a more likely target. Likewise, saying, “Well, they could just go to public school” sort of misses the point, because part of the reason many don’t is due to things like this:

A Muslim girl was attacked at her New York middle school by three schoolmates who referred to the girl as a terrorist organization and tried ripping off her religious garb, INSIDE EDITION has learned.

The sixth grade girl, whose identity IE is withholding, was playing during recess when three boys allegedly went after her on November 19 at P.S. 89 in the Bronx, a school source who spoke on the condition of anonymity told IE.

The boys, who are in the same grade as the girl, allegedly put her in a headlock and punched her as they tried to take off her hijab, the source said.

While beating up the girl, the boys also allegedly called her “ISIS,” the source said.
