If your gonna galavant around with hookers so much that you become known as “Client Number 9” and then your lovely and faithful wife divorces you, well you should be ready to pay child support, alimony, and give her some nice property as well.

Guys this is why we get a bad name.

I still think back to the description of Cuomo that someone involved in New York state politics once gave me. He said, in every major political campaign, you have a back room filled with people who are the ones who never get exposed to the public, because they’re the ones coming up with the ideas you need plausible deniability from. And these people should never be given political office because they’re completely free of any scruples about good behavior in politics. He then said that Cuomo was that guy for his father, except he came out of the back room and pushed his way into the spotlight.

It explains everything repulsive about the man.

I just asked this about Drew Cuomo. I grew up knowing his dad as governor and got even meet him a couple of times, shook his hand. He seemed like a saint to me. And then here’s Drew, all slimy and shit.

Everyone says Mario was genuinely a good guy, apparently. I’m sure like every human he had his awful side, but apparently he was in general a really stand-up person.

Andrew though? Allegedly he was responsible for the “Vote for Cuomo, not the Homo” slogan against Ed Koch. I will admit, he has definitely redeemed himself on that one, and the number one thing I give him respect for is aggressively pushing gay marriage and getting it passed through the state legislature, which was not easy.

Refusing to pay support/maintenance is almost NEVER about money. It’s usually domestic abuse by another form, and intended to punish the ex-spouse.

I would want more details before making any judgments. Their last child was born in 1997 which would make her 18 years old this year.

If this money dispute has been going on for two years then she would have been 16, making the older two kids 18.

Could this dispute center around expenses related to college or young adulthood? That’s a bit different than withholding money that has led to your young children being evicted and living on the streets.

Given the mother is a Kennedy, I imagine this financial dispute has been frustrating for her and if she’s owed the money he needs to pay it but I doubt there was any risk of financial ruin.

Payments during (and even past) college age are usually established during the divorce. It’s common for those who have the means to agree to pay tuition, insurance, and other costs for college. If she’s paying the tuition bills without his help, it’s entirely possible or likely that he’s in violation of an existing and binding agreement.

Or the mother may not be paying the tuition bills at all.

The couple divorced when the kids where 10 and 8. Often times the non-custodial parent will agree to continue paying child support for college related expenses.

But, fast forward 8 years. The divorced, non-custodial parent has now lost the leverage that married parents have when their kids head off to college. If you’re married and your kid starts to flunk out or opts to go to beauty school instead of Harvard, you can withhold support. But, if you’re the divorced, non-custodial parent, you’re on the hook. You’re obligated to pay even if your child has undertaken actions or decisions that you may find questionable. Furthermore, the custodial parent often doesn’t have any signed agreement to provide support during those college years. So, the custodial parent might be saying, “I don’t like that you’re 18 and have a 57 year old boyfriend so I’m not giving you any money.” Meanwhile, the non-custodial parent doesn’t have this luxury and is still on the hook for the payments promised a decade ago when everyone wasn’t thinking that 18 year old sometimes make really bad decisions.

However, we don’t know what the situation here is. Maybe he was just being a cheap dickhead? Maybe the mother hasn’t given them any money, either? We lack important, relevant facts. Of course this is the internet so that usually don’t stop people from rushing to judgment.

Half a million in one year — presumably an unusually good year, if book earning were involved — is hardly “rich” in New York.

Median household income in NY is 56000, though. How is 10 times the median income of the state hardly rich?

(A story about Cuomo slacking on child support payments would be “politically embarrassing,” the Post points out.)

And yet, for regular people, it results in garnished wages. That would be something. Garnishing the gov's paycheck for child support.

As an attorney the used to do debt collection, including wage garnishments...

When a state employee would have a judgment against them and we acted to attach wages, often the Commonwealth would respond citing immunity from state courts and we were unable to actually attach the wages.

Here, in MA, it is not exactly the same process as NY, as MA has a specific probate court for support matters, but I believe NY does family law in the Supreme Court. I wonder if the same would apply there...

He was happy to pay support for his children until they were old enough to ride the subway. At that point he was afraid $2.75 of his money might accidentally go to the MTA, and he had to draw a line somewhere. Harder to bankrupt public transportation if riders keep paying the fares.
