A good friend of mine was raised in the San Bernadino area, and his mom still lives in the actual town. I immediately checked with him to make sure his family was okay. I don’t like that this is something I’ve had to do several times in the last few years. And I really, really hate that there are people who call to check on their loved ones and get awful news instead.

Same. I had a friend who was at that Eagles of Death Metal show in Paris and I freaked the fuck out.

ETA: Now that I think about it, my former roommate was attending school at Virginia Tech during the shooting in 2007 and was in the class that was shot up but she skipped class that day because she was hungover and didn’t answer her phone until 2PM and had no idea what happened.

Wow, one of those times when something unpleasant (like a hangover) may have saved her life. I always find that sort of thing interesting... When someone calls in sick to work or school, only for it to possibly save their lives.

And today the U.S. Senate, in a virtual party-line vote, reaffirmed the tradition of being bought and paid for by the NRA:

Those poor people and their families. The names read like a cross-section of the nation of immigrants that we are.

TBF, the vote rejected an amendment to a bill that didn’t relate at all to guns (I hate when politicians do that)

To be even more fair, the bill that was proposed to be amended was when about defunding PP, so the GOP still sucks.

According to Buzzfeed, Sierra Clayborn’s FB photo still features a French flag to show her solidarity with the victims in Paris.

Sometimes I fucking hate this world.

Made the terrible mistake of looking at the comments of the Buzzfeed article. (Shudder) Someone is on there claiming to know one of the victims and spewing anti Islam rhetoric. Way to honor your dead friend.

I keep seeing reports that they’ve decided the third (alive) guy they caught wasn’t involved after all and no mention of still looking for the third person. Have they decided there were really only two (this article states three) or what?

From all the outlets I have read today, the third person was not a viable lead. There were two confirmed shooters. I think they only questioned the third person who was a former roommate of the dude, because three years ago he bought guns the couple used in this massacre.

Hm. They were chasing after some guy yesterday through neighborhoods and backyards and thought he had fled the SUV. All the early reports were of three shooters (I know those are often wrong), but I wonder what happened to that guy they were chasing...

A number of my friends (including one I’m close to) know Larry Kaufman through RenFaire. This is just so horribly cruel, especially because there was hope last night that he’d survived and been in surgery. My close friend is taking it pretty hard.

Here’s the article about him, for any who haven’t seen it. So sad. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la...

“It kills me sometimes, how people die.” - Markus Zusak, The Book Thief

    Me, too.

My sympathies for these people who lost their lives and their grieving families and friends.

This happens so often, but we should never get used to it.

          They’re not Voldemort.

Personally, I want to know everything about them. ESPECIALLY their motives, so I can know what to look out for in the future. Sticking your head in the sand isn’t going to make anyone bullet proof.

FWIW, there is reason to believe that the notoriety of former mass murderers can inspire future ones. This case seems to be different, but in the manifesto of your average white man choking on his impotant rage he’ll mention sandy hook or UVA or whatever. Focusing on the victims and their life and loved ones refuses to give importance to the murderer.

So many lives lost, it just doesn’t make sense that we can continue this shooting after shooting and not do anything.

What about those injured? Has there been any sort of fund set up to help with medical bills?

Do we need to set up a national mass shooting relief fund so we can just go from shooting to shooting? Like the American Red Cross Shooting relief fund?
