    So, what on earth could have happened? An argument at a holiday party might lead to someone returning with a gun and a grudge, but two other people, “assault-style clothing,” and apparently a pipe bomb? Or, looking at things from the other angle, if you were already planning an attack at a time when you could harm the most victims, why would you show up to the party and get into an argument there?

      It IS incredibly bizarre. If the person at the party was deeply unstable, it seems unlikely that they would have partners in crime ready to go at a moments notice..so...

      here’s my take (though not as inspired as true detective up here)

      someone/s (possibly husband wife team?) had a grudge against a person (government official of some type). the man went to the party being held at inland regional center to make sure the official would be there, then went back home, got their wife (?) and loaded up. they go back to party and started shooting. they flee, cops catch them, kill them in gunfight.

      I call this the Great American Story.

    I don’t see how you rope two other people into a workplace violence incident, especially if it was in the aftermath of a moment of passion argument. With explosives and/or packages designed to look like explosives at the ready.

    Whatever the actual details this is going to be crazy even by mass shooting standards. My heart goes out to the victims and their families.

      Latest statement says the room was rented by an “outside health provider”. They won’t say who. I am sure PP would have issued a statement by now had it been them, but it still makes you wonder.

      In the bad days before the ACA I would guess it was a bunch of health insurance actuaries because, man, those guys made enemies.

      Which is crazy because the same CEO said the rental was by the county’s division of the Department of Public Health for their annual banquet earlier in the day. Probably just an error in the records lead to her announcing something incorrect, but that these were civil servants added a little more credence to this being about sending “a message” (honestly, I was ready for it to turn out to be a handful of anti-vaxxer nuts outraged the state took away their exemption to vaccinate their kids earlier this year and looking for the largest gathering of people associated with state healthcare decisions they had immediately available.)

      As depressing and horrible as it is, I think we can all admit if this was about sending a message and racking up a body count a conference room at a county public center in the 100th largest city in America is a terrible target. There are literally hundreds of unsecured venues offering just as much if not better results, especially if you have both guns and explosives. This is like choosing to target a reasonably sized urban DMV.

      Whoever did this had to have had a personal reason to choose this place as a target. But even with a personal reason, the scale of support seems insane.
