This is a shit storm of awful and a distressing read but only a small section of what she wrote. She blames her whole family, friend base and children for wanting to kill herself. She’s clearly been unwell and struggles with mental health and has done for quite a while. I hope she gets help that works for her and she can commit to and while I have so much empathy for her, as someone with a mother who went through a (thankfully relatively brief) period of mental illness I found what she wrote about her family and particularly her children extremely difficult. Who knows what went on except them but it sounds like an intervention gone badly wrong.

Love Sinead forever but when someone has that many children who won’t speak to them... it tells me that she has put them through an awful lot. I hope she gets the help she needs but this is certainly not their fault.

God forbid if something had happened and she didn’t get help today, her children (19, 11, and 8) would be left with a public message blaming them, in part, for her death. I really hope they all get counselling and Sinead gets treatment that works for her.

ETA: In the case of at least her two youngest it sounds like they can't as opposed to won't speak to her but it all just sounds like a big horrible complicated mess. For better or worse, Sinead is an Irish icon and it's horrible to see her unravel time and again.

I feel terrible for Sinead. I grew up in Ireland and watched her go from a really strong, talented young woman who always had to guts to talk to power and took responsibility for way more than it was really her job to carry, to someone who just seemed to feel constantly harassed and lost in life, and with good reason. The press beat the hell out of her.

In the extremely off change that she’s reading this...

Sinead, tá tú álainn agus grá. Cuimhnigh ar do spiorad na hÉireann agus ná lig na bastards a gheobhaidh tú síos.

Agree. Her openness about mental illness and her commitment to social reform say much about her character. I didn’t know until recently that she spent some time in the Magdalen Homes. She has been through so much.

I think people, particularly in America, remember her for ripping the photo of the Pope on Saturday Night Live but don’t remember what for.

It was a protest against the rampant child abuse going on within the Church. In 1992! She was so far ahead of the national conversation on the matter and got fucking crucified for it by the press. It ruined her career.

May the Divine bless her for speaking truth to power. It took a hell of a lot of courage to do so. And years later, we know that she was right..but it cost her big.

What a talent she was and a brave soul. I mean, she’s not dead or anything, thankfully. But my heart goes out to her and her family.

I can’t believe Nothing Compares 2 U was 25 years ago. I thought that was the most amazing song ever back then.

I hope she and her family get the help they need.

That song is timeless. And she was so beautiful in that video with her shaved head. It’s an iconic musical moment in modern history.

Complete agree. I still love to hear that song. Her voice, the lyrics, the pace of the song.

If anyone reading this is feeling suicidal right now, remember that you are not alone, and that you don’t have to fix this all by yourself. What you are experiencing is very, very hard, but you will not always feel like this. Things are going to get better.

Right now, you need to talk to someone who understands and won’t judge you, even if you’ve fucked up and feel like a failure. There is a kind, sensible person sitting next to a telephone, waiting for you to call and talk to them right now. They are going to help you. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed to call. Here is the info that you are going to need. Contact them any time, night or day:

In the UK and Ireland, go to the Samaritans, or email jo@samaritans.org.

In the US, go to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

In Canada, go to the Mental Health Helpline.

    In Australia, go to Lifeline.

In New Zealand, go to Lifeline Aotearoa.

If you are somewhere else in the world, click right here to find a suicide lifeline in your country.

Also, you should read this, On Depression & Getting Help by the comedian Rob Delaney. It is excellent advice.

And this piece that has helped me enormously, and is one I turn to again and again when I need to be reminded of what is happening in my brain, and that it is going to be ok.

And if you just need a few stupid jokes to help distract from the pain you’re in right now, click right here.

Hang in there. Things will be ok, I promise. Go call somebody. They’re waiting for you.

My heart aches for her, and for her family too - I don’t know for sure but I suspect that her illness is not being treated and perhaps that’s why they aren’t willing or able to be around her right now. Sinead, you are a gift and a treasure and we are all rooting for you! Here’s hoping she gets some compassionate, effective treatment and feels better soon.

She had her bipolar disorder “undiagnosed” a few years ago and went off her medication. Which... yeah.

I love her music, and therefor had her page liked on facebook for a long period. In recent months her facebook posts have been really crazy, and she is so mentally unsound at the moment, facebook should ban her (temporary) to protect her from being able to post all this stuff.. she is sharing all kinds of information about people (including addresses/phonenumbers) as well as in depth personal information - friends, family or foe.. they all have been mentioned in the last few months.. (And increasingly so this last week). She should get her butt off the internet and into a psych ward, and get some serious treatment....
