I am getting stuff ready for my Reject’s Thanksgiving, despite my narwhal tusk growing and causing pain and being kinda depressed. Happy Wednesday, everyone!

I’ve been assigned the dessert role and I’m baking two desserts, both gluten-free for a family member who does that:

Hopefully they turn out great! Jezzies, what are your desserts going to look like?

Those look really good! I’m making apple snickerdoodle cobbler (http://www.bakedbyrachel.com/apple-snickerd...) but with my family’s far superior snickerdoodle recipe. And making fresh whipped cream. Today I made Pumpkies (http://www.motherthyme.com/2011/09/pumpki...) to send in with my husband to work, since meteorologists don't get holidays. I left half plain and topped the others with cream cheese frosting, which was probably my best decision all week!

What remains of my family is scattered, but usually every year I make a nice meal of traditional dishes anyway and give thanks for those who are gone, and those who remain. And also call everybody who remains and, you know, thank them.

This year I’ve got some sort of shoulder injury (haven’t been able to get seen by the doctor yet, and it’s nothing like an emergency) that’s causing numbness in the outer two fingers of one hand. The shoulder is killing me and I could easily cut the hand without realizing it. So no cooking for me!

I’ll still call everyone, but not making the foods is leaving me feeling surprisingly bereft. Until being unable to do it, I didn’t think it was that big a deal... but it is!

It would help a lot if some of you would like to talk about your favorite Thanksgiving food traditions. I’ll feel like I get to be part of it vicariously!

Me, I always made the potatoes, usually two kinds (mashed and scalloped). And in later years, added asparagus with hollandaise. They were big hits! I’m also really missing roasted beets, steamed beet greens, stuffing, roasted squash, caramelized or creamed pearl onions...

Our food traditions are pretty basic. Roasted brussels sprouts, green beans with pearl onions, fingerling potatoes roasted with garlic, blackberry crisp, etc. My favorite tradition actually relates to alcohol (naturally). When my family gets tipsy, we tend to tell each other how much we love everybody. “I love you, Bob” and “I love you, Mary” and the ever popular “I love you guys SO MUCH.” So, while we’re cooking (and drinking), someone will ask, “do you love me yet?” while pouring more into your glass.

HI friend! Sorry about your shoulder, that blows. But not as much as chopping two of your fingers off would so I think you’ve made the right decision.

Our meal is pretty traditional but my favorite is my mom makes this killer baked mac n cheese for one of the sides, starting with a roux and everything. My siblings and I make her make twice as much as she wants to each year just so we’re guaranteed leftovers. And yeah, she's given me the recipe and I make it at home sometimes but it's never as good as hers on Thanksgiving.

I was determined not to Black Friday shop and I’ll be damned if my dryer didn’t almost burn down my house and force me into buying a new one. It was technically the Black Friday sale but I bought it last week and now I’ve been waiting 4 hours for it to be delivered. I just finished making cheesecake and a million other dishes for tomorrow and I might get to do laundry tonight if I’m lucky! What are you all preparing for tomorrow?

I’ve been assigned bread, I bake a lot of bread, it’s my weird hobby. I just took Hokkaido milk rolls.out of the oven, and I have multi grain seed and pecan baguettes raising in the refrigerator to be baked tomorrow morning early before my road race. The rolls are for my husband’s grandmother, who likes things plain and the same as they always were. Last Christmas I made a walnut cheese sourdough and she did *not* like that at all 😜

Mom’s hosting Thanksgiving which is great because she’s amazing plus woooo no dishes at my house.

We basically cook together though so I’m staying over her house tonight to help brine the turkey and then get up early to start. Mr. Pie is at our house with Mini Pie and the pets and will be coming down tomorrow.

Which means tonight I get a big ol guest bed ALLLLLLLL to myself with no snoring husband and no toddler waking me up at 2am to ask for m&ms. (Not an exageration, that was last night.)

Is it sad that I’m more excited about tonight’s uninterrupted sleep than I am for turkey and pie?!

Looking for ideas. I need a winter wardrobe solution. In the summer, I’ve discovered my perfect clothing option: knit dresses. It feels like wearing pajamas, but it looks like you’ve made an effort. What is the winter equivalent? Going from my knit dresses to jeans is bumming me out. Again, the goal is to feel like I’m wearing pajamas (warm winter appropriate pajamas), but look like I give a shit. Side note: I’m not comfortable wearing athleisure unless I actually plan on working out in the near future.

I’m literally so stressed that I want to die.

When I was 16, I gave myself an ultimatum: get through school, university, or die. This is my third attempt and I’ve never made it through a second semester. The other two times were art school and this time is English, but it doesn’t count for much. I just freeze up like a rabbit I the middle of the highway, when I get assignments. Then I get more scared and guilty and miss class. I’m getting into that pattern now and this is my last chance.

My boyfriend tells me that he’ll still love me if I’m not in school, that he’d look after me if I couldn’t. I think it’s nice, and he might believe it in the short term, but he doesn’t even want me to live with him in the future.

So here I am, with an 8 page anthropology paper due next Monday, and I still can't find the right sources. The next two are due the following week. I just can't do this at all.

      Yes you can!

Try to do one thing at a time and do your best. Even if you think its crap, the thing is to keep doing it until you get it right.

      Also, big internet hugs!

Yes you can. You need to breath, take a nice hot shower, make yourself some tea and then sit down in a good area and break the task into small, manageable pieces. Mind map it out: what do you need to do, how does it fit together etc. Also go to class. I teach and believe me, when you come to class it makes a difference if for no other reason than to help structure your day. But you can do this! 8 pages is totally manageable, it’s only Wednesday night.

Also you don’t have to have everything figured out right away. Why do you have to go to University? What about a trade? What about taking some time off to get yourself in a good headspace and working in the meantime then maybe going to University? Fuck your ultimatum from when you were 16: life changes and we change with it. What do you want now?
