He’s a hack that recycles old ideas, shocks with violence and continues to objectify women and promote shit stereotypes of people of colour. His hubris and delusions of grandeur are nauseating. Sit the fuck down and STFU already, QT.

    Oh, she’s good at this.

When it comes to the voices of black people, if Tarantino didn’t write the words or isn’t telling us how to say them, he’s not trying to hear it.

He’s really the worst kind of “ally”. He speaks about police brutality and claims to write movies like Django to help black people, but he has to dominate the conversation. He has to be in front of black people rather than next to them or behind when appropriate.

Tarantino is a massive, gaping asshole. Does this surprise people?

Say what you want about Tarantino, but he’s right about this. Selma was a very good “made for TV” movie, but it certainly wasn’t Oscar worthy. Listen, I know I’m going to get heat for this, but can we please stop with the praising and gushing and awarding e v e r y s i n g l e movie about the suffering of minorities? “Oh, let’s glorify these black actors, producers and movies to show how enlightened we are.”

I’m honestly shocked Tyler Perry hasn’t won a fucking Oscar.

Perry does straight comedies. (Not tragic comedies or dramadies. But straight comedies.) When was the last time a straight comedy won an Oscar? Even the Academy has its limits.

Really, it’s appalling how much of an unfair advantage black people have at the Oscars.

They’re both good to great filmmakers. No need to pit them against each other. Dumb of QT to talk dismissively of a movie he hadn’t seen.

From anecdotes I’ve read of people who’ve worked with QT, I’m skeptical that he meant his comment to be dismissive, even if it came off that way. From QT’s clarification, which Jezebel left out:

“Both Bret and myself come from the seventies and eighties when there were a lot of historically based TV movies: the King mini-series written by Abby Mann staring Paul Winfield; ‘Crisis at Central High’ with Joanne Woodward. And ‘Judge Horton and the Scottsboro Boys.’ These were great TV movies. I’d be honored to be placed next to those films. However, I haven’t seen it. Does it look like a seventies TV movie? Yes. Does it play like one, I don’t know, I haven’t seen it.”

I’m sorry, but we’re talking about a reasonably functional adult. Even by the fairly generous standards one is inclined to extend to him, it’s ridiculous to assume he didn’t realize that comment would come across as dismissive. He can be assumed to understand what he’s saying.

See, now this is good. Everyone here was falling over themselves to exclaim how impressed they were about some trashy little gibes Mariah Carey shot at random celebrities. A really classy insult like this is a lot more impressive to me.

Selma did a fantastic job of mixing the practical side of activism with the expected highs/lows of the civil rights movement. Getting just half of that right would have made for a good movie. Nailing both made it a great one, and it’s still disappointing how little love Selma got.
