One deserves only to be paid one’s Value Over Replacement.

This means that if you put a pizza slice in a box, you should be paid only as much as your ability to conduct such an operation better than the next man in line for the job. It follows that you should not be paid very much, obviously.

This is why those in possession of special sets of skills, such as talented engineers or robotics designers, will always be paid well. Maybe pizza box stuffers should aim higher.

So if everyone in line boxes pizza equally well, they should all be paid $0.00? That sounds right.

    This is so dumb.

If it would put the same amount of effort into taking care of its own “associates,” perhaps so many of them wouldn’t be moved to protest in the first place.

Well, no, pretty much across the board. Unionizing will be expensive for Wal-Mart, no doubt about it. Also, not that many of their employees are protesting on a relative basis.

That’s not to say I don’t think that Wal-Mart’s employees should unionize. They should, and I hope the NLRB makes sure that Wal-Mart doesn’t step out of bounds when trying to fight it. I just also think Wal-Mart would be insane not to try and fight unionization.

Why would that be insane? The people in charge have more wealth than they could ever need and attained that wealth by shorting their employees. Greed is a human trait, but so is compassion and humanitarianism and altruism. Even Henry Ford, the horrible anti-semite, paid his workers multiples of what other car manufacturers were paying because he could afford to and wanted his workers and their families to enjoy a high standard of living. It’s not insane to pay your workers a sum you can afford while still turning a tidy profit.

Notice it says “effort” not money. I think it’s fairly accurate to say that if WalMart tried as hard to support their staff as they do undercutting them (which may involve spending some of their massive profits on compensation), they would not have so many disgruntled folks.

So.... Really, how much more expensive would it be to just give the raises than to hire Lockheed Martin to spy, PR companies to spin stuff, Etc etc etc?

Because at a certain point you’re really just revealing the lengths you’ll go to in order to have a docile, broken workforce. If you’re willing to spend money NOT to give them raises...

A lot more, but I agree that’s not really the point. Just pay your goddamn employees something they can live off of and move on.

One things companies don’t get, and one of the reasons why things like minimum wage hikes don’t actually hurt companies as much as people claim it should is this:

If you give your employees more money, then they have more money to spend. Money that they may, in fact, spend at your very business!

The scary part is that confirmation yet again that the FBI likely went ahead and used the fucking Joint TERRORISM Task Force to monitor peaceful, progressive protests. Just absurd that nothing has changed in the last 75 years and the apparatuses of state government surveillance are used once again against anyone looking to challenge the status quo.

I love that the right wing got their panties in a twist over the irs investigating some questionable tax exemption status requests, but is totally cool with the counterterrorism task force being let loose on protestors.

So I’ll be that obnoxious person that lets everyone know that I haven’t shopped at Walmart in over ten years because I can’t go there in good conscience.

Yes, I am better than you.

A few years ago I took a semester off from college trying to figure out what my new major would be (graduating in a couple weeks now). Decided to pick up an extra job at night and got one at Wal-Mart. The ‘training videos’ were essentially just videos saying unions are bad and if you try to work OT you’ll be fired. I remember being to only one of my group to look around to notice if anyone else’s bullshit meter was going off. Sadly, no flabbergasted faces like mine. Wal-Mart is an awful place that takes advantage of the not so educated, desperate for a job type. I never felt better than the night I had enough from my GED having dipshit of a manager and walked out of that hellhole never to return to another walmart to this day. I understand some people need to save money and Wal-Mart is their only option, but I beg you that can afford it, STOP GIVING THIS PLACE YOUR MONEY.

They have people suckered into thinking they are more affordable. In most cases, Walmart is more expensive than many of the stores I frequent. I’ve even gotten things cheaper at Wegmans (which is kind of a high-end place) than I’ve gotten them at Walmart. There are some exceptions (my generic allergy medicine is dirt cheap at WM), but you can often find better buys elsewhere.

They also know they can treat their workers like dirt because there is some poor soul that really needs the job waiting for the opportunity. Hence, their denouncement of unions.

Wait, so not only are my tax dollars going to subsidize Walmart’s insanely low pay and poor working conditions, but my tax dollars are also paying government employees to track/intimidate protesters under the pretense they might be “terrorists”? That’s some straight up plutocratic “1984”, “V for Vendetta” nonsense there. Seems like that would be cause for even conservatives to start looking at corporate influence over our government.

My dream, since I’ve been in my 20’s, has been to own a small business, have between 8 and 12 employees, pay them a middle class wage, and their health insurance, and to be doing well enough that I don’t have to bitch about it.

The only way to realistically accomplish that is to develop the aptitude level of your team, and to make a really great product.

It’s the absolute anathema to this ludicrous business model. And as a taxpayer with dreams of my own, I’m tired of subsidizing this business model that operates unapologetically in bad faith with its consumers, its workforce, and with its nation.

True dat. Why should hard-working small-business owners finance the Waltons’ insane wealthiness by paying for unneeded FBI services for them and food stamps, Section 8 housing vouchers and Medicaid for their children. If Wal-Mart wants to try to oppress their workers, they can pay for their own hired goons. If they do not want to pay a living wage, they can cover the rental subsidies, food stamps, and health insurance costs of their full-time (or similar) employees!
