Victims of being brainwashed. Teenagers are vulnerable and easily susceptible to deceit.

I’d say “at least this might convince other girls who are thinking of joining ISIS that it’s a truly terrible idea.” But not really. If the beheading videos and terrorist attacks on innocents made you root for ISIS, you are probably the sort of person who thinks “well, clearly that girl must have done something wrong, it won’t happen to me because *I* know how to properly serve Allah!”

That is exactly what they think. Exactly what they're conditioned to think. My mom was in a Christian cult in America in the 70s

Yeah...I know teenagers are impressionable and all that, but it’s hard to imagine someone reading about these creeps beheading children and thinking “Sign me up for that!” It’s sad, but my sympathy for anyone running off to join them is pretty limited.

This is really sad. I hope they are able to confirm either way for the sake of their families getting some closure. And before the asshole pile on starts, please everyone remember that teenagers are still SUPER IMPRESSIONABLE CHILDREN. They might like to think they know everything and make great choices, but, they don’t.

This is terribly sad. Also, somewhat related is this article where Robert Evans of Cracked read every single issue of Isis’ magazine. (Yes, they have a magazine, and the things you learn in it is stuff you really never hear politicians talking about.)

Just the article itself was disturbing. And I bet he’s on a hundred terrorist watchlists now just for having read them.

I’m not surprised that they were of Bosnian descent. There are a lot of Bosnians fighting for ISIS. Interestingly (and not surprisingly), the country that contributes the most ISIS fighters (per capita) of all EU countries is Belgium (Sweden is second). http://i100.independent.co.uk/article/belgiu...

Sorry, but prepare to be greyed. The official position is that every culture and nation are totally equal in every way — even if they contribute to terrorism or like to chop little girls’ vaginas up!

My brother lives in Stockholm and confirms that there is a lot of “activity” going on there at the moment. The threat level has been raised to 4 (out of 5), which is unprecedented in the 20 years he has lived there. There have been a couple of arrests in the last week or so of people who were suspected of plotting to take terrorist action in Stockholm, which is also unprecedented. My brother is a singer/model/TV host, so he normally travels all over Europe for work and is hardly ever home in Stockholm for more than a few days at a time, but he has stayed put since he got back from an assignment in Germany last week, has rescheduled everything that was planned for the next 2 weeks, and is considering postponing a job in London that is scheduled for mid-December. He said that it’s really unusual to have this level of hyper-vigilance in a country that he has always described as “basically Utopia.” On the plus side, it might prompt him to bring his husband and daughter here for the holidays.

What ever happened to running away and joining the circus? Hanging out with lions has to be a hell of lot safer than being with Daesh.

    A few thoughts:

    (a) I initially read the two nationalities in the first line as “Australian” and “Vietnamese.” It made much more sense the second time around.

    (2) 16-17 years old is right on the line between “those ISIS assholes” and “you mess with the bull...” territory. Tough call. I’d like to think that I wasn’t that naive when I was that age, but that’s probably bullshit.

    (d) I blame Phish not really touring anymore for ISIS’s enhanced ability to recruit wayward western teenagers. That demographic was right in their wheelhouse.

    (3) If I had left that note at that age, there is no way I would have made it from Plano to Irving (Texas) (i.e. not even to the airport), let alone Syria, before my mother would have had me tied up in the trunk of her car on the way back to Plano.

Yeah unfortunately Phish still does tour. But their main demographic are upper middle class neo-hippie white dudes who just collect rent checks from their parents and eat LSD/smoke dabs all day which...actually from what I hear ISIS super loves LSD. So who knows. Either way, we are not safe from ISIS or Phish.

They (various governments) need to get better at reaching teens and young adults via the internet / social media & interrupting ISIS’ messages to these people. ISIS is reaching out to youngsters who feel powerless & this is a demographic that goverenments ignore unless they need soldiers.

This makes me sad. I feel bad for the girls and their families. I recognize they are children, but I still would have held them accountable if they had been involved in anything that resulted in damage or death to someone else.

They are children, that signed up to go to war. To kill. Did they fully understand the consequences, probably not- but it is too late once there is blood on their hands.

There’s a reason why the enlistment age in the US is aged 17 yrs old (with parental consent). People who have more than a High School diploma or GED aren’t likely to fall for the ‘rah, rah, rah’ nationalistic jingo BS the military recruiters spout. They also probably have enough money or job opportunities that the benefits the military offer aren’t tempting.

Yeah teens can be dumb, but come on, in general they’re not join an international terror cell dumb. Blaming this on their age greatly underestimates teenagers.
