Well damn, if a softball 2013 interview with a politician’s non-politician child isn’t the scandal that’s going to finally bring down Hillary, I don’t know what is.

You guys *do* realize every time you post something like this it just zones people out to any actual dirt you may end up finding?

The ire was aimed at Mike Allen and Politico.

They’re being critical of a media outlet and questioning the credibility of one of its journalists. I never defend Gawker, but you seem a little nervous about anything perceived anti-Clinton.

Give me a break, it’s Hillary’s daughter, what were you expecting, a hard-hitting 3rd degree on Benghazi?

Right on. This is such a non-story. And to try to paint the guy as a hypocrite because he criticized a softball interview with the president is just hilarious. Come on, Gawker. Its the daughter of a candidate. Tone down the outrage.

Journalists should not have double-standards. This story is about the guy from Politico cutting deals. And that matters. It really hurts his credibility.

You’re not alone. My takeaway is that whatever the media teams at Politico and State were discussing, Chelsea didn’t participate. Non-story.

Attempted puff-piece with a non-politician is apparently outrageous stuff for a journalist to do...

Is everyone’s reading comprehension off today?

This is not a hit piece on Hillary or the Clintons. It barely has anything to do with Chelsea, except that she was offered a softball interview and declined it. She’s ancillary to the story.

I always just assumed this was the way Washington D.C. worked - that there is often negotiation of some kind of quid pro quo to gain access.

It’s kind of interesting to see the inside baseball part of it that’s been revealed by the release of these emails, but I don’t think it’s any kind of revelation.

And who’s always accusing Fox of not being “fair and balanaced”? Why it seems like it’s the dominant media outlets (who happen to also not be fair and balanced).

Big News is really going to dislike when blogs become more credible than they are...

Ted Koppel seemed simultaneously disturbed (lamenting the past) and delighted (that someone’s out there) last night when he told Stephen Colbert that he (Colbert) and his colleagues were the best source of real news nowadays.

While many of us have known this for years, it’s quite an admission from Koppel, who’s been a respected mainstream journalist for 50+ years.

Who remembers Jon Stewart’s 2004 Nightline interview where Stewart tried to convince Koppel that you didn’t need to be a comedian to point out to the public that a Republican said a blatant lie. Koppel reacted like he suggested the most preposterous thing.

Mike Allen promising a softball interview isn’t really the story. A more interesting examination in my estimation for a publication like Gawker is a look at objectivity vs. adversarial vs. advocational journalism and where news organizations stand on those things today. Mainstream journalism doesn’t really seem to know what direction to go:

        • Do we just type down everything a politician or official or other person of interest says?
        • Do we only investigate political positions when the other side criticizes it? In other words, do we do independent research of Donald Trumps statements about immigrants and refugees and call him out for his lies and hyperbole, or do we accept his statements at face value until Democrats point us in a different direction?
        • Do we ask “gotcha” questions to try to nail politicians on discrepancies in present and past statements or ask about issues with their personal biographies that may have little value in creation of public policy?
        • Do we choose a side and defend it against all criticism, valid and invalid, a la Glenn Greenwald/Snowden or Fox News/Republicans?

To me, it’s not a huge scandal that news organizations are nice to politicians’ kids in order to maintain access as long as we know what to expect from the news organization. Similarly, if Greenwald is going to go balls to the wall to defend Snowden, readers need to understand that they aren’t reading objective journalism from The Intercept. At this point, the idea of any sort of journalistic standard in this regard is nebulous.

meanwhile, let’s remember: the next interesting or compelling thing chelsea clinton does will be the first. so...good to hear that allen gave a shit and wanted to use his megaphone to bring us the good stuff. i mean c’mon, what would a hard-hitting interview with chelsea actually look like? what is hard that needs to be hit?

between this asshole and trump i feel like a revival is in order for that most subtle of bands, for their name if nothing else:
