That’s actually a lot to carry if you aren’t a dealer.

I wonder if they are arresting for possession with intent rather than just possession?

I know the number cited was possession arrests but I wonder if they are really arresting more under that umbrella.

If they still get “credit” under their quotas for weed, then this won’t stop. I also imagine that when they’re looking for an excuse to lock someone up they don’t like, weed is still an easy way to do that.

Why do we have quotas in the first place? It seems counterproductive to the entire idea of a police force, which is to stop/prevent/lessen crime. Yet, we acted shocked when certain crime rates remain the same, or rise.

Because police have budgets that need to be justified. Use it or lose it.

Maybe also mention exactly who is being arrested?

“As the Post outlines, officers in some predominately black and Latino neighborhoods still have a serious jones for marijuana arrests. Police at Jamaica and St. Albans, Queens’s 113th Precinct, singled out in a Drug Policy Alliance report [pdf] last year for racially disproportionate arrests, continued to break out the cuffs for stoners this year, locking up 259 through September and ticketing just 79. Fordham, the Bronx’s 52nd Precinct was alongside the 113th on the Alliance’s list of the 20 precincts with the highest rates of marijuana arrests last year, and kept at it despite Bratton’s call to tamp it down, arresting 720 through September and ticketing only 168.”

How much celery can you legally brandish in public view without fear of arrest?

The NYPD is a law unto itself, it is out of control, beyond control, and simply not fit for purpose. Sadly it is also too big to fail too, so there is nothing any mayor or commissioner can do to bring the blue boy gang under control.

Article aside, I’m going to take this opportunity to note how much I dislike this guy.

Sadly, I don’t see anyone in the pipeline to challenge his re-election come 2018. Or is it 2017?

First you get arrested for pot, and then you get thrown in Rikers for a few weeks of unsupervised medieval brutality. For one of the most spectacular cities on the planets- and with continually dwindling crime- New York has some surprising rough spots.

I lived in NYC in ‘06 and ‘07 and never saw a problem, even when smelling like a grow room and (stupidly) smoking in broad daylight strolling down the sidewalk a handful of times.

I do have a question about the stop-and-frisk policy. If I’m told to empty my pockets and have my stash wrapped in an opaque container, like maybe a brown paper bag, could I just tell a cop, “That’s an eighth of marijuana and I have it hidden from view to adhere to the law”?

If a cop finds an opaque container during a frisk and it isn’t immediately apparent by plain feel that it is contraband then he can’t open it. Don’t ever just tell a cop you have weed on you. And if he pulls it out and opens it anyway then you aren’t the one possessing it in plain view, he is.

Good! I seriously can’t stand potheads and I could care less about them. People need to grow up and stop clouding their heads with some dumb weed. If you can’t face reality, maybe a few days in the slammer will be a good wakeup call.

Thanks for your opinion Grandpa. Calling everyone who smokes weed a “pothead” is the equivalent of calling everyone who takes a drink an alcoholic.
