Hop on the penniless train, friends. It’s been working swell up here in Canadia. Plus now it’s like finding treasure when you come across one.

Agreed- I dropped a penny from my pocket the other day on the bus and a lady picked it up for me (it had rolled away a bit) like it was precious. I told her that it was my lucky penny. We laughed. It was magical.

We need to get rid of the 1 dollar bill and use the coin exclusively as well.

I’m against the penny, but I totally disagree on this one. Coins are heavy and make noise; a paper bill is virtually weightless and silent. I would much rather have 1 dollar bills than 1 dollar coins.

THERE ISN’T ONE. They just take up twice the space in my wallet. BECAUSE OF COURSE THEY’RE ALSO SUPER FUCKING LARGE.

The issue is that rounding prices up or down fucks over the poor. I’m not a fan of the cost of pennies, but I’m even less of a fan of fucking over the poor.

How does rounding DOWN fuck people over?

And even though i’m just as against the wealth gap as you are, it’s just one cent. Almost literally worthless in the grand scheme of things. Could you please explain what you mean in a bit more depth?

Round up half the time, round down half the time, net result: no change. Perhaps you’d prefer we bring back the half cent too?

I won’t need pennies if EVERY f-king thing didn’t have to end in a 9, plus sales tax is not either 10 or 5 per cent.

In Canada, we still have things that the end of the price ends in a non-5 or 10 cent denomination, but when we pay, it’s rounded up or down.

I was against pennies way before you! *adjusts flannel shirt and plays a wax cylinder* In all seriousness, it’s good John Oliver is giving this issue attention.

Thanks to John Green for enlightening me:

That’s right! I forgot about that (but in my defense, I saw the John Green video before I ever watched The West Wing).

We eliminated the penny in Canada and it’s been an unending paradise of equality and justice and sex.

I knew someone in high school who used to throw pennies in the garbage. He unsurprisingly worked on the Romney campaign.

I’ve had friends who do that, which I think is half the reason I never let them get away. Now once a year or so I get a “free” DVD or fancy dinner out of them. PENNY JAR 4 LIFE

Canuck here: I don’t miss pennies. You won’t either.

What you will miss is an economy that isn’t bloated beyond any sense and completely fucking you, but there’s nothing I can suggest to help with that.
