This is awful, and sadly not the first incident of violence at a second line. I attended one with friends after the Mother’s Day second line shooting, before we headed out in to the sunshine to dance in the streets, cocktails in hand, my friends had us do a quick run down on protocol if shots were fired, advising that we hit the ground, and where to meet up afterwards. These should be joyful events, not sources of terror, policed into non-existence.

I suspect the rising violence in NOLA stems in part from the uneven economic recovery post-Katrina, the wealth gap in the city is increasing dramatically.

Yeah, but the violence was insanely high there before Katrina.

True, it was on the rise. But it’s sad to see that violence increasing again, and to see events like second lines, which are about joy, community, and mutual aid, being targeted.

Would those Syrian refugees really be safer here?

It is close, but yes. Only because there are no third party drone strikes and apostate beheadings/executions here... yet.

Not to mention Assad, the most prolific killer of civilians in Syria.

I was interested in the park name’s origins, and here is what I found on wikimapia:

Bunny Friend Park is named in honor of Joseph E. Friend and Ida Weis Friend’s son, Bunny, who died at age 18.

And, gun shots coming from without and from within the crowd meaning you had people shooting back. Dam it all to hell.

America. Good guys with guns, bad guys with guns, adults with guns, actual toddlers with guns, rich, poor, male, female...you get a gun, and you get a gun! Everybody gets a gun!

No. There was nothing distinctive at all about the shooters, nosiree, nothing whatsoever. Carry on, nothing to see here.

If only going by the sound of wingnuts furiously masturbating in hopes that they are, I will have to conclude...yes.

We do have gangs and a lot of senseless violence. Hard to tell exactly what it was at the moment, though. Most of our violence is money/robbery driven, although there has been a huge uptick in sexual assaults the past six months or so...ugh.

It was gangs. One gang was shooting a rap video and another gang attacked them. They returned fire. Luckily the cops were already moving in to break up the crowd and they all scattered before someone actually died.

      A machine gun?

They are pretty uncommon. It is doubtful that is correct.

Even I agree. I highly doubt he had an M249. I even doubt a selective fire assault rifle, but that might be possible. More likely an AR15 or some variant.

Or, someone heard multiple gunshots and just assumed it was a machine gun because that is what they saw on TV.

Hey, Donald Trump! How about we make people who buy guns register, carry around special identification, and track all their movements and activities, seeing as they cause way more American deaths than Muslims?

Welcome to NOLA! Things like this are why we moved away in 2007. Waitresses getting shot in the face for 20$ in broad daylight right on St Charles Ave? Come on. No friggin’ way. We got so tired of waiting on our number to come up.
