“We’re grateful that Mr. Roker took the time to file a complaint, and I can assure him that we will investigate this thoroughly and take every appropriate action.”

“Thanks, we’ll look into that” is about the most standard customer service blow-off that exists.

Ultimately they will at most send an email or memo to their legion of cab drivers pointing to their “official” non-discrimination policy. Those cab drivers will promptly ignore it and the discrimination will continue apace. Just as with every other complaint of racist discrimination that Black people lodge in America.

But people wonder why Black folks are marching in the streets demanding accountability.

Actually, they’ll probably make Roker show up at a TLC complaint hearing, which is a good and reasonable system but also a big PITA and the reason why more people don’t file complaints.

Not to mention, if it wasn't a famous POC that made a fuss, this wouldn't even be an article.

And of course, the responses to his tweet were full of white people coming up with scenarios (maybe he didn’t see you) that would explain away racism as a factor.

For the record, Al said the driver did clearly see him but sped off once he saw a white guy on the next block.

When that happens, I run up to the cab and jump in. FUCK THAT.

Or if I get in and the cab driver suddenly isn’t going in my direction, I get out and leave his door open. Both of them if I have to.

Petty? Probably. But so is picking people up based on their race.

But, doesn’t your behavior reinforce theirs?

They are in the wrong, but they’ll just point to what you did and say “See. That’s why I don’t stop on black.”

Nope. That is what you call confirmation bias. It’s not my duty to prove someone’s ignorant way of thinking is wrong.

Last summer a cabbie wouldn’t take me and my friends home because we were “too drunk” (ie I’m black and not going to tip well), but the two visibly wasted white girls, one of which I guarantee puked in the cab, were OK though.

Used Uber for the first time the next day. Haven’t been in a taxi since.

And before you ask, the driver was Ethiopian.

Racism is a character flaw, not a physical trait.

How was he able to file a complaint when years ago I watched a taxi driver touch himself inappropriately and ask me if I would have sex with him, and when I tried to complain the taxi commission said I couldn’t do anything because I didn’t have enough details. As if they don’t track the ride especially one which included many drop offs and two different boroughs.

Anyway, I think having a disgusting cab driver start to rub himself is worse than them not picking you up, and i’ve had that happen as well as taxi drivers refusing to take me to my destination and not letting me in the cab until I told them where I am going. I would try Uber, but I don’t know what kinds of screening they do. Not like I know what the taxi service does. I try to avoid all of that as much as possible.

Flip response: maybe he just didnt want to pick up Al Roker.

How does this fit with gawkers insane faux outrage towards uber? Gawker bashes uber at every opportunity, yet uber provides a product that people love.
