If you think this is bad, wait until the Laquan McDonald (Chicago teen over-killed x 1000) shooting video is released this week. Tea Party Uncle Pete will have a field day defending that cop.

For the sake of someone whose balls hadn’t quite dropped when the towers came down: Was the tone nearly this ugly after 9/11? Because I don’t remember it being this bad.

Yes but only amongst the rank and file. The difference now is that the politicians are joining in on it. To be fair to George W., he went out of his way to speak out against lumping all Muslims in with terrorists. He even made a speech from an Islamic Center days after 9/11.

Yes. The first time I ever ran across the term ‘towelhead’ was on someone’s t-shirt in a grocery store shortly after 9-11 (ironically it was also in New Jersey). So, yeah.

“The aide said guys like me were “in what we call the reality-based community,” which he defined as people who “believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.” ... “That’s not the way the world really works anymore,” he continued. “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors ... and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”

In Donald Trump, we have the first truly postmodern candidate.

Right down to the stupid hair.

      Postmodern?

This is how Hitler came into power; promised jobs and building a preordained empire by finding a politically disadvantaged minority scapegoat that was to be eliminating because they were deemed to be standing in the way of progress and righteousness.

We’re repeating history and the populace is enthusiastically “full steam ahead”...

Those of us who couldn’t understand how it happened in Germany, can now clearly understand. It’s a banal process.

The racial scapegoating. The open misogyny. The jingoism blended with outright imperialism. The contempt for the weak and poor.

    The irrationalism.

Trump’s candidacy has all the hallmarks of a fascist political movement, but Donald Trump obviously has no idea what fascism is (at least in the historical sense). Somehow he has reinvented it just by mirroring every venal and vengeful impulse of the American electorate.

This election might become the most fucked up election of the century.

This still doesn’t even come close to the fucked-upness of the 1860 election.

And Trump’s positions aren’t fascist - or not any more fascist than any other candidate’s in either party (save maybe Sanders.) Fascism is fundamentally authoritarianism, and every candidate embraces that to a large degree (“If I am elected, I will...!” And the electorate embraces it.)

Trump’s positions are batshit insane, sure. I’m not even sure what I’d call them - xenophobic, megalomaniacal, narcissistic, sociopathic to some degree (in the stricter clinical sense). But not fascist.

    Interesting article:

What Donald Trump might have seen on 9/11. Hint: Not ‘cheering’ Arabs

Here’s the thing. As the towers came down, some people indeed saw a group of five — not thousands, but five — Middle Eastern men clowning around and photographing themselves in front of the burning towers from the New Jersey waterfront. They weren’t Arabs, and they weren’t Muslims.

They were Israeli and Jewish – young men making asses of themselves, as some young men are wont to do. Perhaps not recognizing the import of what they were seeing.

How do I know this? I tracked one of their friends down to Jesus’ hometown, two months after the attack....

George Stephanopoulos didn’t seem to present a very rigorous response to this freak show guy, either.

And people will grab on to this lie and perpetuate it because of course they will.

Thousands and thousands would have generated at least one photograph from all of the photographers who were in Jersey City on the river. The only people I know of celebrating were a handful of foreign looking assholes from Israel who were probably delighted to see the U.S. suffering some of what they have experienced. I’ve also heard rumors of people celebrating in Palestine. I don’t know if that’s true or not but Palestinian Christians have informed me that it happened to have been the New Year. Edit: I see that someone posted a story about the Israeli’s above.
