I keep waiting for the day that advertisers realize they are - quite often - throwing gobs of money down a black hole of “advertising” with no idea of whether it is working (hint: it’s probably not). But this is one bubble that has been impervious to busting for many years. The internet was supposed to make advertising “measurable” but my sense is that no one except dumb dumbs really clicks on ads and therefore the ads are no more measurable than they were in magazines or on tv. The advertising industry seems to me to be in competition with much of the finance industry as the industry with the most money made on unproductive wheel-spinning.

Actually, with the level of attribution tracking and current browser tools, as basic as cookies and social media login APIs, we know exactly if it’s working or not. TV advertising? You’re right - that’s just correlation.

Mobile and web though? I can tell you exactly who responded to what ad.

It’s not working because they’ve finally gotten the news that millennials are dead broke (at least in NY) and aren’t worth targeting stupid shit.

I’m not a millennial (? if I am I am at the upper age cut off) but I’m passionate about consumer goods and distractions to keep my mind off the empty void inside. I also used to be passionate about the soap opera Passions. Recently, I bought a pair of sneakers not because Taylor Schilling owned them, necessarily, but I was aware that she did when I bought them. I also enjoy walks on the beach.

    Marketing made easy!

I purchased a good kind of cheese made by humble pastoral people in a nice-sounding part of a faraway state because, when I eat this artisinal cheese, my brain stops telling me that I’m already a dry skeleton staring at the top of a coffin.

“focus on reaching the younger consumers based on their passions.”

Good luck finding something you can hang your hat on there, guys.

This just means algorithms based on your previous browsing/clicking/viewing activity.

      It's totally not creepy.

Actually, it should work based on the importance of identity and the internet allowing communities to spring up (like in 1.0) surrounding specifics.

Me? I’d love marketers to stop treating me like a millennial (born 1984) because I’m just not. I lived my formative years without the internet and my life doesn’t revolve around “likes” and “retweets” at all.

I hate the term “passions” as it is used here. It’s a terrible term. “What are you passionate about?”

I’m passionate about being exhausted by how many times people have asked me what I am passionate about.

Have you ever been asked that in a job interview? It’s the WORST.

That should be punishable as a war crime, as should most job interview questions.

The pressing question is what stupid name will marketers give the next generation? Please tell me we are going to be calling them Tweens forever and ever until they die at age 100+

It’s Generation Z. I sat through a 1 hour presentation (given by a very well dressed boomer) about the upcoming generation (because I get to teach them, yay!). They’re supposedly less self-involved but with really short attention spans.

Generation Y eventually got renamed to Millennials, and I expect it’ll be the same with Z. No one wants to be associated with Gen X if they can avoid it.

I don’t think its BS as much as it reflects the reality of Big Data, customer analytics, etc. Previously, advertisers marketed towards population segments based on surveys because that was the lowest common denominator they could obtain with the technology they had.

Now, with location based services, behavioral ads, customer analytics, etc. you can market towards much smaller segments of any population, or even individually.

It works pretty well on me. There are more of us pea brained, easily lead people out there than you think. We join cults. We click targeted ads. We buy things off the targeted ads. We listen to One Direction, probably.

What does it mean? Why this is well-worn territory based on leading practices that recommend optimizing the customer journey through a mutli-screen, omni channel personalized experience in order to touch the customer in truly meaningful, fulfilling ways.

    Duh.

Because "look, all we do is throw shit and see what sticks" doesn't sound quite as trendy and brand-y.

Hi millennials, I am a gen X type person. I am here to officially welcome all of you to something called old. Just embrace it, fighting just makes it grab onto you tighter.
