And abortion still is not. While I am happy to hear that the courts are finally now going to allow men and women to legally marry whoever they want (as they damn well should), women still aren’t afforded the basic right to decide what to do with their own bodies. WTF, Ireland?

That’s because gay marriage doesn’t actually threaten anyone’s privilege.

To be fair, Ireland is a deeply Catholic/Protestant nation. That said, the same sex marriage passed by public referendum. The courts and the government had no say.

I tend to think that reproductive rights will eventually pass in Ireland the same way, given the church’s almost pathological opposition to same sex marriage rights - which did pass. It is obvious that the invisible man in the sky and his illegitimate son are losing their misogynistic grip on Irish law.

Changes of this magnitude in a society dominated by sad, bitter men in robes chanting a 2000 year old myth are amazing to watch, but slow in coming.

It was heartening to see the reform overwhelmingly passed by the people in a popular vote.

However, subjecting human rights issues to majority rules makes me very nervous as a general idea.

At this point, I’d gladly take it over, say, electoral colleges.

And/or letting nine or so people decide on an issue that has repercussions around the world for years to come...
