Reminder: women are hurt/killed in astonishing numbers by their male partners or ex partners. Trans people do suffer violence - as well as anyone who is perceived as gender non-conforming -BUT -check your statistics for the number of trans people murdered in the US this year v.s. the number of women killed by their male partner in the last 12 months.

Of course men fucking hurt and murder women every day.

Why are you #AllLivesMattering on an article about violence against trans people?

Apropos of nothing, A family friend took me to San Francisco for what was supposed to be a day trip back early in the oo’s. We ended up missing our flight back so decide to spend the night in town, and not having prepared we had to find basically the cheapest dump we could, but wanted to stay as close to the Transbay Terminal as we could (BART wasn’t at the airport, yet, I don’t believe). Anyway, we stayed somewhere quite a ways down Mission in some motel that was elevated above a parking lot, and it was gritty as fuck. Now, I’m originally from Detroit, and I was uneasy.

This sounds like it took place in that area. One thing that will dispell the stereotype of San Francisco as some wonderland is walking around it for a day. Loved the city, but it definitely has areas as rough as any you’ll find anywhere else in the country.

Sounds like the Rodeway Inn which used to have a location on 9th & Mission.

Looking at Bing bird’s eyes, I think you’re right. I may have been slightly exaggerating how I felt, but I definitely felt like I had to be more street smart in this area than others. I do remember even then it looks like gentrification was encroaching on the area as I remember quite a bit of construction going on, but not on Mission, itself.

My original headline for this was awkward and clumsy and poorly-worded and made no sense. It’s late and I’m braindead. Forgive me.

How do we know she’s “transgendered”? There are plenty of trans people who are “cross dressers” and transvestites” parading as Transgendered.

My understanding is you’ve trans’d when all your body parts have been operated on.

Trans people are trans, regardless of medical intervention.

Hi Chris. Thank you for the article and your time.

I wanted to point out something that seemed peculiar to me. I realize you meant nothing negative and that vernacular is often regional but where I live stating, “The upshot” is akin to stating, “The positive thing from all of this.”

Ah. Hmmm. The definition I’ve got is “the final or eventual outcome or conclusion of a discussion, action, or series of events.” I personally would use the word “upside” to mean “the positive thing from all of this.”

I’ll reconsider using it in the future in instances where this might lead to an unfortunate misinterpretation.

I can see this happening to me in Oklahoma, but even if I went to San Francisco? I would say that’s just not fair, but life seems to excel at being anything but fair.

I hope they get a really long jail sentence at least.

Yeah, I went to San Francisco last year thinking it would be a safe place for me to go and be able to actually be myself for a few days (I’m a trans woman, still living part time). Guess I overestimated how safe it would be for me. :/

I hear this all the time, and not that it sends me into full-blown anger but people need to stop thinking of San Francisco like it used to be. It’s not really all that welcoming to those that aren’t white, wealthy, and status quo anymore. It’s sad that it’s becoming this way, kind of regressing. Only 10 more months till i’m out of this bullshit city, I can’t wait.

Sadly, SF has a long history of transphobic violence. The Compton’s Cafeteria riot of ‘66 was a response to the widespread police abuses:

I’m beginning to wonder whether all personal violence, even things like terrorist attcks, are not from a phobia or prejudice (homophobia, racism, sexism, religionism) but from a bunch of seriously damaged people who take out their own fears and anguish on others. It’s like an international abuse cycle of “I got hurt, so now I have to hurt you.” I’m sure there are elements of the attacker(s) intending to prove that they’re better than whomever they’re attacking, but it’s pathetic and frightening to know that these attacks are not for something that can be surrendered, like a wallet, but over the ephemeral, inseperable, identity of another human being and the morals and values of a society.

The numbers don’t seem all that different to me and really they are meaningless unless you account for the number of times a group is attacked per capita. Doesn’t everyone experience violence at some point in their lives?

There was one horrific assault on a trans woman in Spokane, eighty miles from my tiny WA town, in 2015. The case was dismissed for lack of evidence. The reign of unrestrained violence must end.
